Kasparr continued darkly, "Are they completely blind? Shade's missing, too! And he's always been a trusted warrior -- Shade wouldn't do anything like kidnap their little healer, Annelise, or whatever her name is." Honestly, what are they thinking? The Siverians have been against us since Light took up leadership, and still they are hostile. The Destinians haven't been much better, but now the Sheerans are believing this crap, too? And we still don't know what caused that fire, or what this whole deal right now is about...
Neveria's ears twitched, the shy, but reflective she-wolf finally speaking after a long period of silence. "Nightshade was really angry....I think the Siverians aren't just upset over Annelise, I think they're relating Iver and the rest of us to mistakes they've made in the past and things that wolves are reporting. She mentioned Babylonia, Snare, Kill....something about them murdering wolves in their camp. But they're all long dead, so how could that happen? And the Siverians, when Blood Mist first came by, tried to strike a deal with them. It only led to great loss from their pack -- Nightshade was referring to that, I think." Intuition flashed in her eyes, and it was clear she had been quite thoughtful on this topic. "Wolves have reoprted flickerings in the smoke, the mists -- the Siverians don't know what they are, but they think Iver has made a deal with these things because of what was scented in Destinian territory...."
Twig looked up, distracted from his shadowed state, and now clearly interested in Neveria's theory. "You think, because of similarities to these past events, Nightshade is assuming there's like....a second Blood Mist out there?"
Neveria shook her head. "Not a second Blood Mist, necessarily. Maybe something like it -- I don't know. But I do know what they mean by the... 'flickerings'...." Neva shivered involuntarily, eyes tinted with fear again. "I....I don't even know how to describe it. Everything gets cold, icy -- not just because of the weather -- but like your bones, your sense of self....and then there's this dark smear in the fog and if it passes you, the feeling leaves with just a bit of aftertaste....."
Tria glanced at Neveria doubtfully. "What do you mean 'if' it passes?"
Neva looked up at her sister with a deep, solemn frown. "We all know none of the Yozorans had anything to do with Annelise disappearing, but there is something of truth in what the Siverians claim: Annelise wasn't a dumb pup or neophyte. She was a pup while crossing the mountains on the Great Journey, the seniors say. She remembers our old home...she saw her mother die fighting Verlust. The path of the healers chose her for a reason. She's not stupid."
Kasparr grunted, uninterested. "So one of the Siverians has a brain instead of a hollow head on their shoulders. Your point?"
"My point is," Neva continued, more animated now, "that Annelise did not just go wondering off in the smoke or get lost. If she was lost in the mists, she would at least know how to get to the Twilight Clearing -- it's a spiritual place, healers often meet there. It's hard to maneuver through, sure, but if she found herself in the Destinians' territory, she would've been able to direct herself across the border. It looks bad, doesn't it? I mean, why would there be a Yozoran scent there? My guess is one of our own was in the same boat as Annelise -- a little lost after the fires, making their way back, and then these 'flickerings' -- they did not pass. That's why there's blood and no other scents."
Trianna groaned. "You're right -- it does look really bad for the Yozorans. Heck, if we didn't know we weren't the culprits -- if we were in a different pack -- I would say the Yozorans look to be the culprits! You're stark raving mad, Neveria."
