You're floating up and down I spin, colliding into sound Like whales beneath me diving down I'm sinking to the bottom of my "Better" Zenya barked, a sly smile on her maw. The fae's eyes suddenly narrowed. They were near the middle of the Twilight Lake now and the middle of the lake never froze as thickly in the middle as around the edges. Slowly Zenya padded toward him and gave him a little push toward the shore. "Come on, get over to the shallows, I don't trust you out here, the ice is thinner." The words had barely left her maw when a sickening crack made her stomach drop. Slowly the femme looked down. "Oh mousedung." A second crack and a spiderweb of splinters of ice appeared under her paws. Zenya barely had time to draw in a deep breath before she dropped.
The cold hit Zenya like the butt of a rifle hitting her in the head. The air she had gathered before going down was knocked right out of her. Zenya tried to swim but she was sinking like a rock. Her fur was weighed down and heavy. When she swam up, her paws met ice. Zenya tried to scratch at the ice but it was too thick to scratch through in time. The tri-colored femmora started sinking again, letting out a strangled howl. Her topaz eyes were wide in panic as she struggled to try to swim, the world around the edges of her vision growing dark. Everything that freaks me out The lighthouse beam has just run out I'm cold as cold as cold can be

Kovre looked over at her as her words of praise met him, and he couldn't help but smile in reply. He had never really gotten any words like that from anyone in his life, and it was a bit new to him. But he had to say he didn't mind it. Taking a deep breath, he exhaled softly and then watched as her eyes narrowed. He looked at her in slight confusion and then felt her nudge to his side, followed by her words. "Good idea..that's all we need." He said jokingly, and then started to make his way to the shallows. He was in front of her, and doing quite well for himself with this walking on ice thing, but then he froze. The cracking sound made his heart jump within his chest, and he looked over his shoulder to see Zenya standing in the middle of cracks, with no hope of getting out of that situation. His eyes widened, and he turned to face her, ready to sprint to her for help. This was not one of those times for his ice walking skills to go south on him. As she started falling, he was already running for her, trying to catch her before she went down. But as he reached the area, his jaws clamped on air, missing her scruff by centimeters.
This was not good. He was going to fall through himself in another moment if he didn't get his weight to balance out. His eyes looked to the ice and then to the hole she had created for herself. But he didn't see her, and he dind't hear any sounds below. He began searching frantcially for any signs of the icey wolfess beneath the surface, but he could see nothing. His heart was beating a mile a minute, and then suddenly he saw something. It was where the ice was thicker and not close to thinning yet. But she had dug far enough to the surface so that he could see the pads of her paws. He gathered himself and leapt to her, slipping and sliding to a halt beside the place where she had been digging. He dug himself, having more power behind it because he was on dry land. He felt his paws breaking through to the water below, for they were becoming damp and weighed down. Finally the surface broke, and he was able to dig a big enough hole to fit most of himself through. She'd be able to fit because of their size difference. Seeing her begin to sink, he laid himself down upon the ice and suddenly dunked his whole entire head into the water, grasping the scruff of her neck with his powerful jaws, being careful not to hurt her with his bite. Gaining leverage for himself, he began scooting backwards quickly, trying to pull her head above the surface. His head came first, and he knew she was right behind him because of his grip upon her scruff. He didn't stop pulling until he had gotten her onto the surface of the ice and away from the middle of the lake. There, he released her if he had gotten her there successfully, and peered at her nervously. He was dripping with water from his front end, but he was more worried about her. "Zenya?"

Not knowing how to think I scream aloud, begin to sink My legs and arms are broken down With envy for the solid ground Darkness had just surrounded her when jaws grabbed her scruff. She was pulled upward, breaking the surface of her silent, bone-chilling prison. Her eyes flew open and her jaws parted, gasping for breath. Zenya's paws were trembling and ice had started forming on her coat. When she reached air, she drew in a deep breath and instantly started coughing. The reflex drove her body to move. She rolled onto her belly and coughed up several mouthfuls of water before going limp again. Steady shudders went through her form, paws trembling, eyes closed. She felt cold to say the least. Cold didn't even begin to describe it. Her paws were numb and her lungs burned as she breathed in, throat raw from swallowing water then coughing it back up. Instinctivly the femme curled up as small as she could get, trying to keep her body heat. "Th...thanks" Zenya stammered, putting her head around next to her paws, curled up almost like a cat, still trembling and shivering.
As the fae breathed, a haunting rattling sound could be heard if you were close enough. Water churned in her lungs, still trapped and causing her to cough now and then, making breathing more difficult. Right now however, breathing seemed oddly unimportant compared to warming up. I'm reaching for the life within me How can one man stop his ending I thought of just your face Relaxed, and floated into space

Kovre was worried about her, to say the least. He had just met her, and this happened. What a great way to start a friendship...or just being around someone new. This was not going well. Taking a deep breath, he exhaled softly and watched her for any signs of life, hoping and praying that she'd take the first shuddering breath. And there it was. As she breathed in, he winced as she began coughing violently, trying to clear the water that had worked its way into her lungs, making her uncomfortable and in pain. He stood above her in a protective way, making sure nothing and no one would come and interupt this. She needed to get warm, and that wasn't going to happen out here on the ice when the wind was blowing every which way. But he knew she wasn't strong enough to get to the trees, and he didn't want to move her yet until she was more at ease. So he did the next best thing he could think of. As she curled into a ball, he circled around her, slipping slightly still on the ice. He was shivering himself from the water on his front half, but he knew it was nothing compared to what she was going through. Sighing softly, he finally settled on what he was going to do.
He circled closer to her and suddenly let himself fall gently into a position where he was curled around her and offering his warmth. He knew it wasn't much, but it had to help a little. He rested his muzzle over her shoulder, trying to keep her as near to him as he possibly could so she could gain some warmth. His voice was calm and soothing as he spoke. "Once you feel strong enough, we have to get off of the ice. If we move to the trees, you'll be warmer there and out of the wind at least. I can make you a bed there so you can get warm." He offered quietly, knowing that he could grab the pine needles and some of the branches for a small bed for her. There he could dig her a shelter beneath one of the larger trees and make sure she was comfortable. He'd still over her his warmth as well, anything that would help. he couldn't help but feel even more and more worried about her as they remained where they were, with her shivering against him. This wasn't good.

I want to swim away but don't know how Sometimes it feels just like I'm falling in the ocean Let the waves up take me down Warmth felt wonderful. Zenya unconciously curled closer to whatever was warming her icy fur. Zenya blinked a few times and realize what she was doing. Reluctantly the fae pushed herself away from Kovre, away from warmth. Trembling, it took a lot of effort to force her cold-stiffened muscles to work. She finally managed to stagger to her paws, shivering and trembling. She looked like a mess. Her former grace and formitable beauty seemed to have broken with the ice. Zenya was reverting back to what she knew. Stand alone. Take care of yourself. Nobody else can help you. Nobody, ever. Trust no one, live longer. Zenya stumbled and slid to the bank, her pawsteps uneven due to trembling paws and waves of chills that would tear through her. When she finally reached the bank, another wave of cold ran through her was the wind blasted at her. It seemed that even the wind could knock down a fae as formitable as Zenya. The femme tumbled into the snow, shivering and dazed.
All she could do was cling to what she knew to be fact. She had to get warm but she couldn't rely on anybody to help her. Others only hurt her. Brutes only caused her misery and pain. Faes only jealous hearts and hatred. No one could help her. No one. Zenya tried to rise ot her paws but fell again, her muscles stiff and siezing up, not allowing her to stand. Let the hurricane set in motion Let the rain of what I feel right now...come down Let the rain come down

Kovre sighed softly, trying to think of how he could get her over to the trees. They couldn't stay upon the ice any longer, and he still felt her shivering and shaking. This wind wasn't helping at all, and he was about ready to just carry her over there himself. He knew he could do it, but he felt badly about moving her so soon after her fall through the ice. He was surprised she didn't have hypothermia by now, and he was trying his bes tnot to come attached. She had made it quite clear that she wanted help from no one, and even though she had been helping him, he had been surprised she had agreed to it. But he wouldn't leave her now, he couldn't. She would surely die if she was left by herself. Taking a deep breath, he exhaled softly and then was aware of her moving away from her, becoming defant and self supporting once more. He remained where he was though, watching her from where he lay. If she wanted to move, then that must be a good sign. But she looked unsteady and unsturdy, and as she almost lost her footing, he was up in an instant. He followed at a distance behind her, sliding himself.
He didn't see her as a fae that was incapable of anything at the moment. She had just almost drowned, and now she was getting past just falling into freezing cold water that could kill anyone if they were by themselves. He respected her for getting up so quickly, but he wanted to make sure she was alright first. He traveled after her quietly and watched with a grimace as she plummeted into the snow. He stood at a distance, knowing not to intrude yet. He would eventually, but now was not the time. As she tried to rise to her feet once more and was unsuccessful, he moved in. He didn't care if she didn't want his help right now. She wouldn't make it if she remained here out on the cold ice with the wind blowing her down. He soon stood next to her and crouched down, his shoulder going against hers. He pushed up so she was standing up against him and started making his way slowly to the line of trees with her if she decided to come. "Let me help you Zenya. You can't do this alone. You just almost drowned in freezing water. Once we get to shelter you can do whatever you want." He said, assisting her as much as she would let him. He wasn't going to abandon her. He wasn't going to be like all of the other wolves she knew.

Not knowing how to think I scream aloud, begin to sink My legs and arms are broken down Zenya felt him moving her but only numbly. She'd lost feeling in her paws by now and her eyes were starting to loose their defiant fire. Her head lowered. That was a sure-fire sign something was amiss. Zenya's tail dragged in the snow, twitching now and then and her eyes slid half closed. She felt numb and so cold she now understood the term "bone-chilling." Zenya decided she couldn't do anything alone right now, especially since she was practically coated in ice and too numb to twitch a paw. She did however, try. Zenya was well known for being stubborn and that meant she would be stubborn about moving on her own, even if her voice was lost at the moment. Each deep breath burned like a million icy needles peircing her lungs and her chest rattled with each breath. It was an eerie sound, water still trapped with in her. Truth be told Zenya was beginning to wonder if she'd ever feel warm. Everything was cold and even her blood seemed to be icing-over in her veins, moving sluggishly.
The tri-colored femmora's eyes were dull and glazed by now. She'd lost all will to bother trying to resist Kovre's help. He'd be gone soon enough anyway so why not take what she could get? If he left then that was that and she'd make a point never to cross paths with him again. It was truly a rare thing for anybody to see Zenya so down and out. When she was again capable of concious thought, she would burn with embarrassment at the very thought of being so weak but right now, the thought was far from her mind. I'm reaching for the life within me How can one man stop his ending

He couldn't let this happen to her. Taking a deep breath to calm himself down, he let it out slowly. It would do no good for either of them if he started panicing. He needed to focus and get her to the trees and out of the wind. It would help a little. There he could make a bed for her and keep her a bit warmer than she would be out here with no shelter. He looked at her lying upon the ground and instantly felt as if this was his fault. He should have never asked her to show him to walk on ice. It wasn't that important. He could have survived through the icey seasons with just sliding and slipping to his destinations. And now because of his selfishness and want to show her that not every wolf was the same, she had fallen through the ice, and now might not make it. She was warning him, and now look what had happened. This was all of his fault. He shook those thoughts from his mind for the time being and went to her, shifting her up so she was basically leaning on him and he was carrying her. He knew that she was having trouble doing anything right now, so he was trying to support her as much as he possibly could. He was not going to leave her.
As he made the slow and steady way to the trees, he made sure she was alright after every step. Kovre wasn't used to caring for anyone but himself, so this was a bit new to him. But he was doing well for them both at the moment, and soon was moving at a faster pace, still checking on her constantly. As they neared the line, he looked to her with a gentle gaze. "We're almost there." He encouraged her and soon reached the shelter of the pines. He placed her beneath a smaller one for now, until he could find a better shelter for her to be beneath. Looking around, he caught sight of a large tree that's limbs were weighted down with the last snow fall. It made a small opening beneath it, and he knew that would be a better option for her. Moving quickly, he went beneath the limbs and started digging a large enough hole for the bth of them to lie in, so he could continue giving her the warmth she needed. Moving to the other tree, he used his jaws to pull the fallen branches beneath it too, for they still had the soft needles upon it. He gathered the fallen needles as well and made them into a small bed. Going back to her, he helped her once more to the shelter beneath the tree and made sure she was upon the pine bed he had created in the hole. Once she was situated, he circled around her and finally let himself rest beside her, giving her his body warmth once more. He wouldn't let anything happen to her here.

I'm so tired of being here Suppressed by all my childish fears And if you have to leave Zenya felt warmth again and this time, gave in. Her dulled orbs drifted closed and sleep washed over the icy femmora. Image after image floated before her closed eyes, faceless wolves chasing her, a large black brute stalking toward her in a night-darkened forest, no escape and no way out. Cold winter nights when she thought she'd freeze to death, all alone in a world as black as a new moon and as cold and quiet as a tombstone. Alone. It was the one thing Zenya understood. Being alone was a way of life for her. Born alone she would die alone. Life taught harsh lessons and Zenya had gotten more then she'd bargined for more then once. Now she was trapped in a nightmare-filled hell trying to escape, trying to run but unable to move. It was all the same, all dark and cold, faceless wolves running so close she could feel their hot breath and then total and utter silence. Nothing. Blackness. No wolves. No one. No one to save her. Drowning in the reality of being alone, going deaf from the sheer silence.
As she dreamed, Zenya's paws would twitch and her visage would contort in a pained grimace or a sad look to break the heart. Sometimes she would flinch and sometimes a soft whine coudl be heard escaping her nightmares. A whine was something seldom heard from Zenya, much less when another wolf was so close. The sounds were pleading, calling. She didn't want to be alone yet....she was. If was all falling apart, she was all alone and standing on the edge, ready to fall. I wish that you would just leave 'Cause your presence still lingers here And it won't leave me alone

Kovre didn't know if she'd be hungry or not when she woke, but he didn't want to chance leaving her. He was worried about her, and if he left, that meant less warmth for her. He didn't think he could do that to her. But she would need to regain her strength once she woke, and at least she had the bed below her to rest in for added warmth. Sighing softly, he looked at her once more and pushed himself to his feet. He nosed her quietly to make sure she'd be alright and was soon exiting the small shetler he had found for them. She'd be safe there, and at least he could get something small for her to feast on. He doubted she'd be very hungry, so he figured a squirrel would be enough at the moment, since they were easy to catch and he wouldn't be gone for too long. But all of the time he was away from her, he worried about her. What if she woke up and he wasn't there? Then what would that prove to her? He shook his head to rid those thoughts and forced himself to hurry up. As he stalked a ways off of the forest path, he saw his prey up ahead, scrounging for nuts. At least Kovre would relieve the pest of the worry of finding food for the winter. Sighing slightly, he crept low to the ground, his feet moving soundlessly over the forest floor. As the squirrel seemed fixated on whatever was beneath the snow, Kovre made his move.
He had been crouching in the undergrowth, and he now moved forward, seeing the squirrel freeze with fear. He was upon him in a flash, and his strong jaws clamped the life out of the smaller creature. Making sure he was good and dead, he hurried forward, carrying himself at a sprint back to the shelter of the trees, wanting to be there in case she woke up. As he neared the pine, he was aware of a whining sound, and he titled his head in confusion. Was she alright? Ducking to get inside of the small hut that was created by the tree branches, he looked at her with worry laced within his eyes. She seemed fine, but it was like she was having a nightmare. He deposited the squirrel off to the side and out of the way and then took his place beside her once more. He moved closer to her to help her, and was suddenly aware of her cries intensfying. He woofed softly, as if it would comfort her somehow, but also wake her. She couldn't be enjoying herself at the time being. He nosed her gently, trying to wake her. "Kenya. It's alright..." He spoke, wondering if she'd wake and be caught off guard by his nearness to her. He was only trying to warm her, so hopefully she wouldn't grow upset. He sighed softly and rested his muzzle upon the ground, hoping she was alright, and would be okay.

From underneath the trees, we watch the sky Confusing stars for satellites I never dreamed that you'd be mine But here we are, we're here tonight Something brushed her fur. Someone was there. She wasn't alone. The whines and twitching died away as the nightmares were chased back, away from her to the back of her mind. Zenya knew that to some extent they would continue to stalk her but at least for now, her mind was quiet and she could rest. She felt warmer now and soon broke from her deep sleep though didn't open her eyes. She didn't want to open her eyes and find herself alone so she remained in that strange place between sleep and alertness. After a while it seemed Zenya was growing more alert as sleep was chased off. She felt warm now, oddly so considering she thought she was alone. Maybe it was just her imagination.
Finally as night neared, a sigh escaped the femme. She would have to open her eyes now so she could hunt and find a place to spend another lonely night. Time to wake up. Zenya opened her eyes relucantly. She didn't want to find herself alone and find that Kovre was simply a dream and drowning had been her way of waking up from another nightmare. For a while, Zenya simply laid there, staring at what seemed to be the wall of a shallow den. Under her form, pine needles made a soft nest, the scent stinging her nose slightly. Blinking, Zenya tried to think of how she could have come here. The femme turned her head and her eyes widened. It was Kovre, laying near her, very near. It took a full minute for Zenya's mind to kick into action. The femme let out a startled yelp and jerked back slightly, caught totally off guard by the brute. "What....what in hellfire..." Zenya stammered, thoroughly surprised. "Why are you still here?" she asked finally. If everyone cared and nobody cried If everyone loved and nobody lied If everyone shared and swallowed their pride Then we'd see the day when nobody died

Kovre kept himself awake and alert in case anything happened outside of the small sheltered den he had found for themselves. He felt like it was his responsibility to keep an eye on everything and to take care of her. It was his fault she had fallen through in the first place, and he should have paid more attention to where they were moving upon the ice. He shouldn't have walked so far out, and then maybe there wouldn't have been a problem. If he had just stayed by the shallows, then even if one of them had fallen through, it wouldn't be too deep. But he had been so intent on learning what she had to teach him and listening to her words that he hadn't even paid attention to what was important. He hadn't been aware of his surroundings, and he hadn't done anything to prevent her from falling through. He didn't even react quickly enough to grab her before she went down too far. This was all of his fault, and she didn't deserve to be in this position. He wished that it could have been him instead of her, just so she didn't have to go through this pain or the feeling that she was freezing to death without any hopes of being warm again.
So he did the only thing he could do. He stayed by her and stayed awake, even though the only thing he wanted to do was fall asleep himself. But then that would leave her without any form of protection, and he couldn't be responsible for hurting her anymore. So despite his exhaustion, he forced himself to stay awake and alert so nothing would happen to her. He took a deep breath and exhaled gently, then tried to think of a way to entertain himself so that he wouldn't drift off but still would pay attention. He looked around the small darkening den, and realized that night was falling. This wasn't going to be good. She was probably going to have a fit with him being so close to her when she woke, and he didn't want her getting the wrong idea. But he didn't want her to have the absence of his warmth, so he stayed beside her and prepared himself for the leap he would have to make when she woke. He felt her shifting beside him and knew that it would be soon. As she seemed to sit still for a moment, he held his breath and was suddenly aware of her moving and turning her head towards him. Locking eyes with her, he heard her surprised words and yelp, and was on his feet himself, backing away into the corner so nothing would happen and she could have her space. Registering her question, he replied in all honesty. "You almost drowned, and almost froze to death. I wanted to make sure that you were alright, and I couldn't leave you. So I stayed. I got a squirrel for you if you're hungry. It's not much, but it's there. I'm sorry if I angered you in any way, but I was worried about you, and I didn't want anything to happen to you. So I stayed. But I'll leave now, if that's what you want." He finished quietly and was soon directing himself to the opening. He didn't want to overstay his welcome.

If I'm so wrong ( How can you listen all night long? Now will it matter after I'm gone? Because you never learn a goddamned thing. As the brute spoke, things started clicking in the femmora's mind. Drowning. Cold. No air. Ice. Kovre. Warmth. Cold. Nightmares. Zenya stared at Kovre for a moment then blinked once then twice. "You....you helped me? Why? I mean...this is...I...." Zenya was lost for words, stammering and stumbling on her words like a newly named neophyte. Had it been anyone else, Zenya would have been thoroughly embarrassed at her lack of proper speech but Kovre had already seen her with worse problems then lack of words. Finally Zenya decided she didn't really have words to thank the brute. Without him she would have frozen to death or drowned. Her life, whether she liked it or not, was owed to the brute. At the moment Zenya couldn't decide if she minded that or not but decided it was a thought for another day, when she wasn't still half frozen.
Her movements stiff, Zenya rose to her paws and limped toward the brute. She was hesitant. She'd known betrayal by brutes and was wary of pushing her luck. When she was about six inches from him, Zenya stretched out her neck and touched his cheek with her muzzle, licking his muzzle lightly before turning and limping back to where she had been and laying down stiffly. "You can stay if you want. This is a den you dug, you have every right to stay." You're just a sad song with nothing to say About a life long wait for a hospital stay And if you think that I'm wrong, This never meant nothing to ya

His eyes were still gentle, but they held a bit of worry within them. He didn't want to offend her anything, but he wasn't about to leave. He wouldn't leave unless she wanted him to, or he knew that she was going to be alright. And right now, she was still half frozen, and he wasn't about to abandon her. Taking a deep breath, he let it go in a small sigh, wondering what was going to happen now. As she stared at him in surprise and shock, he gave the same look right back to her, not knowing what else to do. He would definitely leave if she wanted him to, but he wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. He'd be worried about her to put it simply, and since he felt like this was all of his fault, he would see it through. Looking over his shoulder for a moment, he realized he could see slightly through the thick pine needles, but not that much. They were safe in here, unless another wolf or animal decided they wanted to use this same thing for a den. He wasn't going to let that happen. They were comfortable here, and they were going to stay here until she was capable of moving out. It wasn't bad here, and it was rather roomy. He could deal if she could deal.
His tired eyes gazed into hers, and he wondered if she actually was going to kick him out. So far, she just seemed extremely surprised and dumbfounded that he was even here with her still. Kovre felt bad for her, because it was apparent that she had never met a decent wolf in her life. He was lucky, he had had his mother and his father, as well as his sisters. They were his friends and his family, and they had protected one another. But they were close, and they had never been unkind or cruel to him, and he had never been that way to them. There was only one who was that way, and Kovre had trouble thinking about him, let alone talking about him. He shook his dial slightly to clear his thoughts and then looked to her as she got painfully to her feet. He stepped forward to offer her assitance, but she was making her way over to him. He looked at her in surprise, and then was suddenly shocked as she touched his cheek and licked him. That was thanks enough for him. He looked at her, his eyes wide, and wondered if she was really feeling alright. He remembered her questio before and then spoke in reply. "I..I stayed because I cared." He finished simply and then heard her next words. He offered her a small smile and then lowered himself in the snow in the corner he had shifted into. "It's just as much your den as it is mine." He finished and then wondered if they could talk about anything. "Are you alright? You didn't seem to be too at ease in your dreams. Excuse me if that is overstepping my boundaries though." He finished quietly and quickly, looking somewhat ashamed of his question.

What is this feelin' takin' over? Thinkin' no one could open my door Surprise...It's time To feel what's real What happened to Miss Independent? No longer need to be defensive Goodbye, old you When love is true
Zenya snorted softly, laying her head on her paws. "Nothing's ever alright with me. My dreams are the same as my life, lonely, cold and empty." Zenya didn't look at Kovre, mostly because she felt ashamed. This brute obviously had a life and some sort of dream that had driven him so far from his home. Zenya however, didn't really have a reason. She just wondered from here to there, sometimes helping when she could but vanishing before anybody found out. Sometimes she would get in a tight spot and have to fight her way out but other then that, Zenya simply roamed wherever her paws decided to go, whichever road looked less traveled. The femmora finally turned her head again to look at Kovre. "Why are you here anyway? I doubt a wolf would come for wherever you came from just to save somebody from drowning and freezing, if you did, then you're crazy."
Her gaze had regained some of its shine and brightness though not quite her former fire. She was stiff and still cold but kept that tucked away. No need for him to feel like snuggling again though it was nice to know there were wolves willing to save others. Zenya still knew she'd never be at ease with brutes but maybe one couldn't hurt. Almost as soon as the thought crossed her mind, Zenya locked it away. No. Nobody, ever. Eventually he'd turn into the same good for nothing mutt just like the others. Miss guarded heart Miss play it smart Miss if you want to use that line you better not start, no But she miscalculated She didn't want to end up jaded And this miss decided not to miss out on true love So, by changing her misconceptions She went in a new direction And found inside she felt a connection She fell in love.
