Slowly, the need to howl faded. Nadira lay down in her spot, the only area in the entire den area not covered in blood, and stared sightlessly at what had been her home for all of her life. Ghosts of the past moved around her, memories of growing here, playing with siblings, learning from the elders and all the normal happy experiences of cubdom. She whined softly and slipped into weary, broken sleep.
Before the dawn she wakened. Hoping it had been a dream, she opened her eyes only to find the sad, horrific reality. Steeling her inner fear, sorrow and feelings of loss, she focused on her anger. She smelled the wolves that did this in the surrounding area. She would never forget that scent...and when they finally met she would avenge SilverFalls in any way she could. Her hackles raised and a deep growl vibrated within her throat.
She was clever though. She knew she could do nothing alone. The pack that did this took out 8 full adults, four other sub adults like herself and three all-but-helpless cubs. Why?
With a sigh she turned from the den area and began to hunt for small game. She would need to keep up her strength and find a strong pack that would accept her if she was to carry on the SilverFall lines...and exact her revenge.

Easily catching a young rabbit less than a mile from the den site, out of habit she carried it back. Half expecting the eager greetings from the youngsters, she feels the sorrow anew when silence and the smell of death greets her.
Wolfing her meal but not even tasting it, she cleans herself before looking around again. This would be the last time. The ghosts were all that remained and she had need of flesh and blood companions.
She sat down with her back to the den, looking off to the distant horizons that marked the lands her pack had traveled and beyond. Tipping her head back she began to howl. Farewell to the family that had left for the Summerlands without her. Farewell to the only home she had known. Her ears flickered and she heard the ghosts answering howls as they travelled onward and wished her well.
She stopped her howl and listened to the last echoes off the hills and trees. Another deep sigh escaped her as she lay down for the last time in these familiar trees. Tomorrow she would be a lone until she could find a pack to take her in... so she slipped into sleep.

((Try not to double post, please ;D ))
Akemi, a loner but very wise, was secretly following the packs. She had gone off course when she caught onto the scent of another wolf. It wasn't a rogue like what had attacked the packs on their journey.
She pricked her ears at the sound of a howl. She knew she was getting closer, so she slowed down her pace. She stood on top of a large gray boulder and looked out in the distant.
Akemi lifted her head and howled. When she was done, she jumped off the boulder and hid behind it. Her fur bristled not with fearfulness, but with excitement.

((OOC: Humble apologies... I thought I was on my own for 25 more days LOL I figured I would be posting all alone til then))
Ears flicked forward and back as she slept. Nadira heard the howl, not too far off, but her mind dismissed it as a dream or as wishful thinking. But it didn't fade when her eyes opened and she could scent wolf on the air.
"Who could that be?" she wondered, getting to her feet, nervous, excited and curious all in one go, "clearly it can't be the pack that attacked SilverFalls or they would have finished me by now".
Scenting the air she moved away from the den and gave short, questioning yips in the direction she had heard and scented the other wolf(s). She was offering safe welcome to the stranger with that opening... she just wondered if it was the wise thing to do...

Akemi ears twitched. Her heart was pumping fast now that she had caught the attention of the other wolf. What should I do? What if it's a dangerous wolf?
She took a huge breath, then walked out from behind the rock. Her body was low to the ground as she walked closer to where the wolf was. She was in no condition to fighting if there was any danger nearby, so she hid in a few bushes.
"Hello..." she said quietly. Her body shook at that one word. She backed up a little, ready to sprint off. She held her breath as she waited for a reply.

Instinctively Nadira's hackles raised, though she doesn't growl or show her teeth, seeing the other wolf's submissive stance. Standing stiffly, chin raised ever so slightly, ready to fight if need be, she replies authoritatively but calmly, "Hello. Who are you? *scents the air and looks past the wolf* Where is your pack?"

Akemi backed up a little more. "The name is Akemi. I don't belong to a pack." She stood a little taller, tail slightly raised. "The real question is, who are you? I've never seen you around these parts." She was starting to feel a little more confident.

Hackles raised a little more, Nadira is confident and bold, her voice even and just a little haughty, "I am Nadira Silverfall, beta in the Silverfall pack who have held hunt in these lands for generations." She falls silent for a heartbeat...two...three... then something flickers in the pale blue-green eyes and Nadira's voice softens just marginally, though her stature doesn't, "Where are you from? Are you thinking to stay near or are you just passing through?"
Nose twitching as she continues to assess the one called Akemi, Nadira's hackles start to lower some as she perceives little threat here.

Akemi stood to her full size and looked on at Nadira. "I am a loner who comes from afar. To tell the truth, I just moved into these mountains." She looked down at the ground while she sat down. Her tail curled neatly over her paws. She studied Nadira for awhile, thinking... thinking.
"So why are you here alone?" she asked. "I know that there are a few packs traveling across the mountains to run from this new threat of theirs."

Looking completely surprised by Akemi's answer, Nadira tilts her head and asks, "A loner? On purpose?" clearly very unbelieving that such was possible.
When Akemi asks why she is alone, Nadira is silent for a moment...two...three... looking at Akemi assessingly. Finally she turns and starts back to the den-site pausing to look over her shoulder to say with such a mournful tone, "I'll show you..."
Nadira leads her to the den-site and whimpers softly under her breath at the sight. She comments, "I was scouting for our next hunt. I am quite good at it and mom wanted to stay with the cubs..." she falls silent again. Her voice is low and a growl when she adds, "I don't know who did this, but I will not forget their scent. I will avenge my pack." looking over what was once her family, hackles rising some. Then she stops and sighs very heavily and looks at Akemi, "Can't do it alone. Need to find a pack who will let me join." she says softly. Sharing all with this stranger.

Akemi lowered her head at the site. "I'm so sorry. I became a loner after my pack led a rebellion against me. I was leading some young wolves, so they pretty much didn't understand what being a leader was like." She sighed as she tried to not remember much of her past.
She thought in her head about the packs now traveling across the mountains. "I know where there are some packs. I've been tracking them down as they cross through the mountains. There are about four packs. Two of them are traveling together after they were attacked by some rogues."

Unable to speak at the sympathy given, Nadira drops her head and nuzzles her head against Akemi's shoulder in mute thanks.
She listens as Akemi tells her of how she became a loner and of the other packs. "Do you want to join the packs? Is that why you have followed them?" Nadira asks curiously. "We could travel together for a time, if you liked? I - I can't stay here any longer." she added more quietly

Akemi shivered, not with cold, but with fear. "I'm scared of joining another pack, to tell you the truth. I'm scared of becoming the leader or something of a pack, just because I'm smarter than most wolves." She licked a paw to try to calm herself down. "I only follow the other packs to help them if they need any. Since they were attacked by rogues, I think they may have more trouble in the future."
She looked up at Nadira, her eyes gleaming. "And, of course you can come with me! It'd be great to have a traveling partner, too. I could help you get accepted into a pack, if you wish." Akemi could understand why Nadira didn't want to stay here, so she would help her the best she could.

Nadira tilts her head at her new friend, not understanding. "Why would you be afraid of joining a pack? Leaders are not forced to be. Not all wolves do well as leaders. In our pack there was one who was more wise than my mother but chose to be council instead of leader. She was respected and loved as much as leader for her gifts. A pack is family and even when the same blood does not flow in our veins we are pack and family." she replied with some confusion in her voice, wondering what sort of pack this wolf had been part of...not a good one to her thinking.
With a brilliant smile, Nadira jumped up and shoulder checked Akemi playfully in response to her accepting a new travel companion. "Which way were they travelling, Akemi?" she asked eagerly

"Well..." Akemi turned her head and sniffed the air. The other wolves scents were growing fainter each minute. "We better hurry. They're scent will be lost in the wind and... there's a storm coming to. A blizzard." She ran to the top of the hill.
Akemi looked down on Nadira. Her tail wagging happily. "Shall we start going?"
