Diablo forced himself not to lash out at her. In BloodMist, that would've earned her a punishment of tooth and claw-- flogging with fangs was discipline. But she was Liv's daughter, and he held back. "...more of a self-hatred as far as I'm concerned..." Narrowing his eyes, he added, "We return there soon but not now... not now..." His throat tightened, tears stinging in his eyes. "...until he is gone..." But he couldn't help but think of Lucinda's death, and sorrow flooded his heart. He jumped to his paws and staggered into the bushes, vomiting and shaking slightly.
Your voice has chased away... all the sanity in me.

"You can't live in fear! If he's there I'll slit his throat!" Annanti aruged, swiping at an invisible foe with her claws, ignoring the foul stench of vomit.

"You think I'm afraid?" Diablo growled, coughing and gagging at the same time. Pulling back, he closed his eyes and waiting for the world to stop spinning. "...and what do you think I'm afraid of?"

"Him." She woofed simply, licking a forepaw. She examined her sharp claws, gaze hard and stony. She scarcely cared who she was talking to. In fact, she scarcely cared for anything at all. If she died going after him, so what?

Diablo smirked, gradually controlling the tremor that spiralled up his spine. "I've seen much worse than him... I'm not even afraid to die." He eyed Annanti out of the corner of his eye... and stopped breathing for a moment, remembering long ago when he used to only gaze at Lucinda in this manner. Never directly... never personal. And yet here he stood with his granddaughter. If only I were alone... but I can't let anything happen to this one. I failed twice. If I fail again, I might as well throw myself off a cliff. "What is your name?"

"My name? Ah.,...Annanti," she woofed. Her stormy-grey eyes regarded Diablo for a moment, emotionless as ever. She was curious, but still hesitant "Did you really run away from them like Momma said? I mean...you really left your pack because of a vision?"

Pain fell into his gaze, and Diablo supressed a shiver. "...yes. But it turned out to be all for nothing..." He stared down at his paws. "Never could I have chosen... and I payed the price for my inaction... or, rather, your grandmother payed the price."

Annanti took a few steps closer to Diablo, eyes starting to water. "And Gran....she really makes things grow? And you...you're a healer..." All at once, the world seemed to crash down over her head. She was aobbing, shaking violently and burying her face in Diablo's fur. She couldn't explain it....maybe the intensity of the previous events was finally starting to sink it. Maybe she just needed to be a young, weak pup for a moment.

Diablo didn't reply-- couldn't reply-- because when he opened his maw to speak Annanti buried her head into his fur. He looked down, feeling warmth against his fur for the first time in moons. Not the scarlet blood nor the bitter wind that he had grown used to, but the sense of comfort in having another wolf beside you. Slowly, the assassin curled his muzzle around Annanti, cradling her with his muzzle as a parent would do to their child. "Yes... she makes things grow... she makes miracles." He paused, and shakily whispered, "...miracles like Liviana..." He, too, allowed himself to weep... silently, but just as agonizingly woeful as his granddaughter's sorrow.

Annanti managed to look up at him after a few silent moment. She still wept, but now was silent, eyes swollen and red with grief. She spoke no words, but turned her head to the stars. Her head tilted back and her eyes closed slowly. A howl, raspy and thick with grief, rang through the trees.

(if Annanti dies before Diablo does, then he'll go insane : Hearing this howl, Diablo tilted his head back with his ears parallel to his muzzle. Opening his maw, he released a mournful howl, joining with Annanti's cry to create a beautiful-- or, rather, a beatifully sorrowful-- wolfsong that echoed amongst the trees and escaped out into the night's dark abyss. I must protect her... Diablo thought. Closing his eyes tighter, he added ...or die trying!
