(god, I'm bored And I need to get some muse out, so...)
Why am I here?
Embers flickered beneath his paws, hot and scorching. With every step, burning sensations ran up and down the soles of his feet as chunks of molten rock scattered from his presence. The all-too-familiar realms of Hellfire, come to greet him upon return. He could just feel the blistering heat of a flame’s tongue, licking his fur and caressing his being.
Yet he did not remember intending to come here.
Why am I here?
“Because you wanted to come here,” a voice answered.
Lupus nearly jumped out of his skin… yet, at the same time, he found himself not so surprised to find a familiar face crouched behind him, eyeing him thoughtfully. …dear GoldenWolf, why must she eye me like that?
“What do you want?” he growled, spitting out the word ‘you’ with emphasized disgust.
Verlust chuckled, amused. “I would’ve thought it to be you who knew the answer to that question… or do you just not understand what I mean when I say ‘I just want to talk’?”
Lupus snorted, not believing. ”Since when did you ever want to ‘just talk’? Even when I lo—” He caught himself, biting down on his lip. He wanted to swipe at her, especially after seeing her playful smirk… but couldn’t bring himself to sink that low. “…just tell me what you want to talk about.”
“Old times is all,” she replied evenly, puzzling scarlet eyes betraying nothing but faux innocence.
The death god curled his lip, taking one pace back. “Whatever you’re up to, I swear that as soon as I find out… I’ll… I’ll—” He brought a claw up to her throat. “I won’t hold back.”
But she merely smiled. “That’s not what you said that night on the plateau…”
The words stung Lupus, forcing him to stagger back a step. “T-that was uncalled for!” he stammered.
“Mmhmm… so is this!”
Verlust had lunged forward, shoving her form into his, eyes gleaming as she first touched noses with him… and then disappeared behind him, curling a tail around his frame.
“…”
Lupus knew that he was angry—furious was an even better description, with his muscles tensed and eyes seething with rage—but at the same time he didn’t do anything. Perhaps it was the steamy air of warm fog that made him delirious, but Verlust actually seemed quite… attractive…
“…I’m married!” he blurted out suddenly, not quite sure if he was yelling at Verlust or himself. He slipped away from the seductress, shaking his fur briskly. “I really shouldn’t be talking here at all, with all t-the stuff happening…”
“Lupus, you seem tense,” Verlust observed, eyes flashing.
“Tense? Who’s tense? I-I’m a… no, I’m…fine.”
Damn this femme—who is she to make me this way?
But the queen of damnation and desire was slowly casting her spell on him, and Lupus had to bite back the tempting lust that curled his lips.
“…leave me. Leave me NOW!”
“But whatever for?”
Verlust was brushing her coat against him, eyes shining. “Don’t you remember the old times? Don’t you yearn for them?”
Lupus hesitated. “Sometimes,” he admitted, “but not so much that I’m blind to the present! I have a life now too, you wretch!”
Verlust seemed interested in what he had to say—and this made him all the more uncomfortable.
“Rhain loves me. Thorn is good company, and Death and Flame may be distant, but they are also my children. What could be better?
“What about our children?”
The question seemed so obvious… and yet it stunned Lupus all the same. “…our children? Y-you mean the dead… those? Them?” When she nodded, the black wolf exclaimed in near-hysterics, “What about them??”
“Don’t you want to get even?”
The anxiety in Lupus’ eyes suddenly boiled into rage again. “How dare you lead me on like that! You know perfectly well what happened last time—I’m not allowing my fury to get the better of me again!”
“But they owe me and you, don’t they? And if you don’t care about our children, than I will—and you’ll owe me something again! I wanted those children, Lupus.”
“You wanted them only for heirs!” he roared.
“Are you accusing me of not loving my children?” Verlust snarled angrily. “I may be a bad wolf, but I would have nurtured them all the same!”
The ferocity with which Verlust spoke surprised Lupus, but he remained cynical. “Well? What do you expect me to do about it? What’s lost is lost!”
Verlust had grown very quiet. She leaned forward and licked his ear gently. “But we can still start anew. Another life, another chance… We are gods for GoldenWolf’s sake…”
Lupus found himself staring into space, completely cut off from the world. He couldn’t believe his ears! Verlust was asking him to—
“MARRIED!! MARRIED MARRIED MARRIED!!! How many times am I going to have to say that I can’t love you anymore! That you just need to go into the shadows and stay there… please! I’m begging you, stop it!”
And it was then that Verlust shoved her own paw on top of his paw with extra force, eyes blazing venomously in the crimson light. “You promised me children when we first started out, and I intend to force you to keep that promise!”
Lupus winced, unsure of how to respond.
All around him the flames were growing higher, crackling and hissing as smoky fumes billowed up to the cavern ceiling.
Thank GoldenWolf Rhain doesn’t know I’m here he thought grimly, wondering how he should handle the situation.
(…I couldn’t think of anything else to say X3)
