Arroyo blinked slowly. "He killed me once... he wanted to... rape and kill your mother. At least, he threatened to when I found him- I fought him and wounded him, but he had torn my jaws-" he felt himself tightening the muscles in his jaw, as if making sure they were still working "- and thrown me into the river to drown. When I washed up and someone found me, they went to get your mother... and when she came, I was dead.... sort of. But she brought me back, and got a goddess to heal me...." He cut his story off there- that was all she needed to know about that. "...but the point is, I was ready to die for a reason, and she brought me back... but when she died for a reason...." Silence again.

Annelise looked a bit afraid now, but deeply thoughtful as she returned her gaze to Arroyo. "How exactly did she die, Dad? I mean what was the final straw for her?" She looked at the herbs around her, eyes fascinated, but also confused and anxious. "Does anyone know, really? No, I don't think so....you can say it was Verlust, but I don't think it was. She had seven lives when she fell. Seven lives...." She hesitated, then said, "The goddess brought you back because she knew you still had a fate to live out. You were one of the twenty-one, Dad! Mom's era was finished...nobody wrote another chapter for her because the pen ran out of ink. Do you understand that?"

Arroyo let out a long, soft breath, now turning fully away from her. He knew she had logic- knew that she was right. But how did it change things? Facts about Siveria's death aside, Arroyo knew that he couldn't change the simple truth that he had been the walking dead since they had settled in this new home... or, rather, this imitation of home. His heart was still back in the other forest, where he had grown and lived... and died. "...what does it matter now?" he murmured quietly. "I can't make up for what I've been all these moons.... or, actually, what I've failed to have been all these moons..." Arroyo looked as if he wanted to sink to the floor and melt into a puddle. "...I can't make it up to you... nor to Kar. Nor your mother..."

Annelise shook her head, sighing softly. "No, you can't 'make them up', as you say, but you can put them to rest and make use of the time you have left. I have an idea....and....you might not like it, maybe you will, I'm not sure. But I think you need to go to the Eternal Tree....sleep there. I know most wolves are not allowed, as there is a barrier that scarcely is let down, but you will be let in, I know this....go there tonight. Sleep. Dream. And return to your daughter and son tomorrow morning.....and your mate. She never really left, Dad. She's still here, you can see it mirrored everywhere, in the very name of our pack, in the grounds we walk on, in every warrior's face here....do it. Please, I think she would want you to...." She murmured, eyes pleading.

Hesitation flashed across his face, but he forced out a slow nod. "Okay... I'll do it." He began to stand- pausing halfway in a painful wince when his leg didn't move. "...I'll do it now..." He straightened his form and began to pad to the entrance... and stopped there, his limp leg beginning to move with the help of the herbs. He glanced back at Annelise with a strange emotion sparkling in his eyes. "You are very beautiful, you know... and I love you. I love both you and Kar... I just needed a little help to remember that." That said, Arroyo turned and began heading toward the entrance of the camp... and was gone again, fading into the darkness. Yet his heart was heavy, for he had had another dream last night... and he was afraid that it was about to come true...

Annelise's eyes widened at his words, shocked, suprised, but at the same time melting with delight. Since they'd set foot here, she'd wanted to hear those words so terribly bad. She'd wanted to know that he was still there, that he still cared, that they still mattered. And now, she could taste the sincerity that touched his voice, and she knew it was true. He remembered them. She was in such a shock that she stood there, dumbfounded as he made to leave the cave. She padded to the entrance, calling after him, "I love you too, Dad! And thank you....thank you so much!" She watched him leave, smiling the truest smile she'd ever given anyone, tears glistening in her gray-blue eyes. Finally, she tore herself away, putting herself back to work in the healer den. But she could not stay still, she could not focus. I need to talk to Shade, she realized with a jolt. I like to talk to Shade. More than I should. But he will be happy for me. So would Kar but....I don't know.
