The night was thick and inky and dark, a cold, heartless breeze blowing through summer grasses. The femme ran on, tears blurring an oceanic gaze. Her pelt was hard to make out in the dim moonlight but she seemed to be a female of silver and blue, patched and lined with the black of night.
Finally, she ceased her run, standing beside a shimmering Twilight Lake, breaths coming out in gasps. She sank to her paws, not caring that she was now wet and partially submerged in the cold waters. She laid there, her grief unbearable, crying into the lake.

The ebony form of a brute lay sprawled out on a rock alongside the territorial border. His amber orbs turned to the sky, wondering, pondering... imagining. Imagining only the greatest fantasies and desires in his little head. I think I'm in love... You can't say that! But you can't stop it... Enough! Sighing deeply, Shade was suddenly tugged out of his thoughts by the sound of sobbing. He perked his ears, straightening his form. It's nearby- coming from the lake. Leaping from his perch, the night-toned wolf raced toward the waters... and skidded to a halt at the edge of the brush, realizing that it was none other than Annelise herself. And she was crying. Heart tightening, he slowed his approach, head down, tail low. "...Annelise?" He didn't want to frighten her- she seemed fragile enough as it was.

Annelise was not aware of the other wolf, not until he'd spoken her name. She slowly, raised her head, eyes bloodshot and weary. "He's dead, Shade. Dead. Gone. I made peace with my father, but what does it matter now? He's...gone..." she choked out. Annelise had only cried really twice before; when her mother died and when Kar was gone. This was not her usual, determinedly optimistic self.
Even the best fall down sometimes;; Even the stars refuse to shine.... Out the back you fall in time, I somehow find, you and I collide...

Shade frowned, ears falling flat against his skull. "...I'm so sorry, Annelise..." He knew all too well the feeling of losing a parent- a sibling, too- and knew that Annelise probably had it even harder. Without hesitating- without thinking- Shade stepped forward and pressed against Annelise, as if holding her steady, while curling his muzzle around her in a comforting embrace. (( I'm listening to 'Fix You'...))

Shade was there, like comfort in a blazing desert. She was still shaking and trembling violently, but slowly, she began to calm. Her tears fell silently, but her grief remained painful and sharp, like the point of a knife. She tried so desperately to speak, to thank Shade, to tell him it wasn't safe for them, to tell him that she didn't care about the pack borderlines, to tell him they could be exiled. It was all too much to say at a time like this, so after a while, she gave up on trying to find her voice and settled there in Shade's embrace.

It took a while, but slowly his mind began to catch up with his actions, and Shade stiffened for a brief moment. What am I doing? The boundaries... But almost simultaneously, Shade found himself relaxing against her form. Enough with the rules- I'd take Annelise anyday... Then- in heated impulse- Shade bent over to lick a few tears from her eyes.... hoping to GoldenWolf that she wouldn't snap at him and drive him away at the gesture.

As Shade grew slightly closer to her, she felt a small flicker of warmth. It seemed impossible to feel anything but numb, angry, gray, miserable, and yet here he was, making her feel better. But this couldn't be allowed; she was supposed to be a trusted healer to her pack, not a traitor! She tensed for a moment, but her inner self argued with her. You're feelings are greater for this wolf than you've ever had for anyone else. You deserve this peace. You deserve to be together. But we can't be together! Maybe not physically. But you can at heart. She relaxed again, sighing heavily. "S-Shade....we shouldn't be here," she whispered, voice strained and distraught. "But I want to be here. I shouldn't want such things!"

When she tensed at his touch, Shade withdrew his tongue. Had he gone to far? You idiot... And then she spoke. At first, he had the impulse to stand up and walk away, feeling as if he had been slapped in the face, his cheeks now raw with the sting of rejection. But then Annelise had admitted to what he had wanted- that she actually wanted to be with him. He almost wanted to thank her, but reminded himself that that would be foolish, and that she was correct. They shouldn't be there, together. After a moment's hesitation, Shade pulled his muzzle away, diverting his gaze. "...I wouldn't want to be responsible for having your pack question your loyalty.... if you want to go, I won't stop you..." He paused, wondering if she would leave... and knowing inwardly that her going back to her pack was the last thing he wanted. When did everything suddenly become so confusing?

"...I don't want to go, Shade...." she sighed, confused and victimized by a migrane. She bit her tongue for a moment, then looked at her paws. "This is my fault....if anyone saw us now you would be in trouble with your pack, possibly exiled, and I don't want to be the reason that happens to you! I love my mother's pack with a sharpness that will never die, never. But there is more to me than that and these things that I can't help! I can't help but want to be with you! It's something irrevocable and irreversable and irresponsible but it's in me nonetheless," she breathed.
