Fireflight had barely gotten Aliya's body back to the camp, ignoring the shocked, tormented faces of her pack, her family, as she plunged back into the flames of the Twilight Clearing. They had lost many. If they hadn't excaped the clearing, Fireflight knew they couldn't expect them to return. Dark shadows had lurked behind the flames, unknown enemies waiting to tear into each and everyone of her packmates, her friends. And even the other packs. There needed to be four packs; that was how the balance of life went. Without even one, the other three would flounder and struggle, only to die painfully and alone.
Fireflight knew her pack needed her, but she also knew she would not be able to speak to them quite yet. She needed a moment to break down before facing the others. Before she would have to be strong again. She bowed her soot-streaked head, tears forming in her eyes as she sat on a high stone. The fire had not yet spread here, but it would. They would need to seek refuge somewhere. The loner territories, even the mountains would work...but Black Fury stalked them still. There would be very little hope of escape...and Fireflight had a feeling that not even rain could quench that blaze.
Oh, Aliya.....how can I lead them through this? I'm barely stable myself!

Russet pelt paled with ashes, Euphrates silently padded forward, head bowed in a mix of defeat and sorrow. The fire... Aliya... dear GoldenWolf, what did we do to deserve this? Lifting his muzzle, his ears slowly rose up upon noticing a familiar figure nearby. He had come out to the forest to be alone, and hadn't expected to find company... and Fireflight no less. Swallowing harshly, he quickly realized that she was in pain- emotional pain, that is. And that was enough to wound his heart, and soon he was walking faster, only slowing his step when he was no less than a foot away from the she-wolf. "...Fireflight..." They were the exact words he had uttered at the clearing during the fire- the first word that raced into his head when he was faced with a life or death situation. Her name.

Through the smoke, Fireflight made out the faint, almost completely obscured shape of a wolf approaching her. However, this wolf was not one of the wolves that held the dark eyes in the clearing. And the voice, no matter how clogged with smoke, was one Fireflight knew immediately. "Euphrates?" she woofed softly, her bark hoarse from inhaling the smoke. "I'm sorry you have to see me like this....." she sounded ashamed, sorrowful, even regretful. She offered him an empty half-smile, eyes pained. But some of the pain was wiped away when her golden eyes met his. Nothing could wash away the scorch marks completely but time, but Euphrates was enough to give Fireflight a bit of her old confidence back. She had to lead the pack. She had to do it for him, for them, for herself. It was what she was meant to do, and Aliya wouldn't have chosen her, Svel's reccommendation or not, if she had not thought Fireflight could handle this.

"Don't be sorry," he responded quickly, eyes traveling up and down her form. She was a mess- emotionally and psychically- but that didn't matter. Not to him. Stepping forward to close the gap between them, Euphrates gently licked her face, ignoring the bitter taste of soot from her fur. "...I..." He withdrew his head. "...I wanted to see if you were alright..."

At his words, she couldn't help but smile a little wider. "I'm fine, I suppose," she sighed, still deep in thought. 'I think I'm just....shaken. And a little scared, too. I...." she hesitated, then sighed, "I can't honestly expect Toss to lead the pack. Especially after what happened back there....what did happen back there? None of the leaders seemed to know any more than the rest of us. It's just....a lot to take," she confessed. She rested her head on his shoulder, voice becoming pained. "And then the worst part -- knowing that you might've been hurt....or...." She intook air sharply, looking absolutely agonized.

Upon hearing her final words, Euphrates embrace her tightly by cradling her head with his own. "Hey, hey... I'm fine, alright? Don't worry about me- I'm not leaving you alone out in this world, okay?" He didn't mention that he was thinking the exact same thing about her- he had been praying that she had made it out of the inferno safe and sound. As for Toss... He agreed, really- Toss was mentally incapable of assuming such a position. He was far too old- in fact, it was a surprise he hadn't died already.

OOC: Oh geeze XD "He really should've died already" LOL
Fireflight, even in this world of swirling ash, felt comforted. She looked out across the soot-strewn territories, even in the dim lighting and flickers of flames, she could see them, running through the territories like they had that one day long ago. Some day, those times will come back. For now, we'll stick through it. No leaving, no dramatics like Romeo and Juliet. We're too good for that... Nah. Just staying together. I like that idea. "Good. Because I swear, without you, I'd probably be going crazy right now," she giggled, eyes flickering with a trace of her old humor.

((well, it's true!! XD He was older than Arroyo, lol!)) "Crazy?"He raised an amused brow, smiling at her. "Aww, now now- we can't have a psycho serving our pack! I guess I'll have to stick around longer than I thought!"Winking at her, he added, "Strangely enough, it's the opposite for me- you drive me insane! I mean, if there was such a thing as being high off love, I'd so own that title..." (XDXD) A smirked, wondering why he suddenly felt so giddy while such a tragedy had just fallen over the forest. ((I'll kill Toss off real soon He's far to old...))

( *snickers* I don't let my wolves get that old *evil smirk* ;D Oh...and you might want to check the meeting thread again ) Fireflight attempted a sudden frown, but couldn't hide her wide smile and twinkling eyes. "This is ridiculous, you know that? You make me way too happy! I'm supposed to be moping -- heck, I bet this is even a crime, Euphrates," she rolled her eyes. "We're completely breaking the rules.....because there must be some rules! We're criminal masterminds, you and me!" She snickered.

((yeah, I forget to kill off my old wolfies, lol and kk- on meh way! )) Euphrates couldn't help but laugh at her statement. "Hey, that's what's good about you and me- we make such a great team! Heck, I bet we could cheat GoldenWolf if we wanted to!"Smirking, he leaned down and rolled onto his back, looking up at the sky. "And of course, of course- there are always rules... I know that because I always break them!"

Fireflight didn't feel guilty as she grinned this time, probably because her thoughts were suddenly distracted. "Oh yes, Euphrates, I'm sure you live on the wild side!" She teased. "What's it like, running with the rough and tumble type? Sounds like you live for the thrill!" She was suddenly on her paws, nipping him lightly on the ear, then darting away in a flash, kicking up debris as she flew. "So, how about it then, or am I too fast for you?" Her copper eyes danced with amusement.
