Death sighed, drifting away from his stony facade and allowing the story to flow. "Remember when I was still.....Blood Mist leader?" he asked, stumbling over the words a little.
I almost forgot I never was technically 'alive' until I fell into that lake...and then I died again right away. Ha.
"Well, the real trouble between Slash and I started when I got this neophyte -- Frozenheart. She was the only neophyte I ever trained, and I only really did it 'cause she didn't have any parents left or....anything and she....reminded me a lot of myself." He shuffled his paws, a feeling of hysteria and oddity washing over him as he realized this was his first real father-son conversation that involved things like 'feelings'.
"And, well.....we really hit it off. And then Slash got all pissed 'cause I wanted to bring back Verlust and, quite frankly, nobody really remembered much about Verlust then, so she said I was out of my league. I got mad because my macho self does not like being doubted, and Frozenheart never did that....and then she caught me talking to Frozenheart about it and she just up and left. And it drove me crazy, back then. I did love Slash, I guess. Well, no, I know I did...." He looked at his paws for a long time, silent, contemplating.
"I did love her. And I loved her when we got up here, too. But....she was so different. She was always different than me, opposites attract, right? But....it was an irrational difference. A vast difference. And after you and Rhain got married....and she wanted that to, I just...."
He glanced back at Lupus, wincing.
"I wanted it to, but not...with her. You and Rhain were legendary to begin with, but it was all just so...epic, and I know you two have that thing where even if you tear each other to bits, you'll never swerve in your love for each other. Even if you commit blasphemy, it would all, originally, be because you wanted to keep each other from a certain harm. But when you would see each other in any sort of pain, you would always still drop everything in run. Like on the bottom of that lake. Or like Siveria and Arroyo --- he could've died there, too, but he still stood there to say he loved her one last time. And I remembder collapsing to the ground, and Slash just walking away and....I know I was a murderous bastard, but she didn't say a thing!"
He shook his head. "It was a long time ago, but that never really left me. Tyrannical I was, but she'd still said the way she felt before. You didn't see me in that clearing. I might as well have had fire set to my body. It was......there aren't words. And then I just....I left Slash. And I don't know where she went, honestly. And the Frozenheart came back and...."
He stood up and paced, clearly itching to move around a bit and uncomfortable from the conversation taking place.
"It was a strange thing I died for, and in truth, me and Slash will be counted among the notable stories told by seniors to young wolves, but it takes some thought to realize that it wasn't glorious love -- it was one-sided. And....the fact that Frozenheart still talks to me after all of that proves that maybe she was the right choice and the universe is just waiting for me to make it."
Death shook himself roughly and spat, glancing warily at Lupus.
"You and I, we totally did not just have this conversation, got it?"
