Tatiana laughed mirthlessly at Firefly's request. "It's not so hard as that, Firefly. Everything we do involves instinct -- from the immediate reflex if someone comes flying at you, to the patterns of our own thoughts. Things that just happen automatically. But we don't have to talk about them if you don't want to -- Akiak's just a real sour sport. Apparently he doesn't know what playfight means." She turned her head to pointedly glare darkly in the direction Akiak was moving, a mere dot in the distant night time backdrop now. She turned back to Firefly, a more pleasant expression on her features now. "So what do you want to do?"
Etheris watched Akiak as he went, an odd pulling feeling in his paws....he felt like running after Akiak. Not to berate him or talk about what had just happened at all....more to find out about the neophyte. He seemed awfully dark and brooding, but there had to be a reason for it, right? Sure, he'd said something about a bear, and more meaningless banter about instincts, the very mention of which was starting to get under his pelt. But there was something more, wasn't there? Or was he just imagining things; was he so bored with his own existence that he believed things that weren't even solid? She shook himself roughly, blinking his attention back to Tatiana and Firefly, though he still felt deeply unsettled.

"Um," Firefly hesitated, unsure now. He wasn't used to being the decision maker, and to have this older wolf asking his opinion now made him antsy. Suppose he said the wrong thing? Is there any wrong thing to say? Well... there might be, and he didn't want to take any chances. "A race?" he asked sheepishly, ducking his head a little. The cool wind bit at his ears as he said it, as if trying to dissuade him with the promise of frigid air.

Etheris, still swimming in his dark pools of thought, felt his tail wagging at the mention of racing, the only thing that could really engage him and draw him mind from the shadowy space it was prowling in now. He glanced at Firefly, the slightly younger wolf seemingly nerous about the aspect. Huh. That's weird. Ah, well. I need a good run, need a good thrill....need to forget about all this serious stuff for a little bit. It's gonna make me grumpy pretty soon, otherwise. He nodded, a small, playful smile on his maw. "Sure, why not? What do you say, sis? Haven't had a decent run-around in a long time," he barked his affirmation.
Tatiana nodded, wearing a wide grin. She padded just a few steps away from them both, taking a moment to stretch her long ebony and silver-blue limbs, each in turn. She glanced back at Firefly, an encouraging blink. I don't really get why he looks anxious, but oh well. Don't really know him that well, but maybe he's just still unsettled by Akiak. Well, at least I know to stay away from him -- he's just kinda weird. "Sure thing, I'm up for it!" She barked. "Where should we race?"

Akiak had already slipped into the shadows when Firefly had mentioned something about a race. Akiak felt bad about upsetting Tatiana and possibly the others. He didn't want to give himself a bad reputation so he paused for a moment before comming back into veiw. Akiak wished he would just leave this stupid pack already before he becomes to attached especially to the wolves of the pack in case another died or was killed he would probably go insane. Akiak cautiously approached the other wolves with his head lowered and tail down. "I heard something about a race.....May I join.....I am sorry about making you all mad....I am just trying hard and failing at fitting in....so do we have a truce?"

Both Etheris and Tatiana agreed to the suggestion, which made Firefly smile a little. The anxiety left him completely, a bubble of pure excitement for the race to come surrounding him. "Well, how about-" A rustling in the direction that Akiak had left distracted him, and he trailed off to watch the wolf return in a more submissive posture than he had been in before. "You want to join? I see no problem in it." He looked at the other two who were getting ready to run, and then back at Akiak. "Where do you want the destination to be?"

Akiak looked around himself. He saw nothing but mostly flat rolling plains and more forest. He thought the race shouldn't be all over the territory because that would be too tiring. Then he looked at the forest on one side and the distance to the other side. "Why not race from one end of the plains to the other end." He suggested and hoped that it was reasonable enough. Tatiana acted like a geyser in a way because whatever you say could possibly cause her to erupt. He laughed at the thought to himself when he thought of his metaphor.

Tatiana eyed Akiak warily, with some flecks of annoyance in her blazing blue eyes, but she shrugged and nodded cordially. "Sure thing, I'm fine with it. Etheris?" She swiveled and woofed to her brother for his acceptence of Akiak. Funny, all we wanted to do was play, and we end up making a friend, sure,....but a wolf to be kept at a distance, too. She offered Akiak a small half-smile. Well, hey, maybe he means it and is just having a rough time of it. Hm. Well, I'll have to watch and just keep an eye on that one. "Oh, and across the plains sounds great, to me! It's a nice long spurt then, so it won't be sprinting the whole time, but it'll definitly be an interesting contest, then," she barked, croushing and flicking her tail merrily, eyes set on the grassy course ahead. Piece 'o wolfnip!
Etheris cocked a brow as Akiak made his apologetic re-entrance. Etheris felt his interest falter slightly. So the wolf was just sorry, just a regular old ordinary neophyte. Gah. We never get any interesting characters around here...I mean sure, it's easy to have fun and stuff I guess, but I want adventure! It seems so dull and dreary here all the time...I guess things might get better when summer comes, and we can maneuver a bit more, and there's more animals and stuff to explore. Hm, I wonder what it will be like when I become a warrior... He lost himself in the daydream for a moment, frowning when his sister jolted him back to reality. "Sure, sure, sounds good. Oh, and don't worry about it Akika, it's fine," he woofed distractedly.

Akiak gave a half hearted smile. He was trying to make friends but he has suffered too much loss if he got to close. Akiak looked at the three wolves. He then looked at Tatiana and smiled with a sly expression. Akiak took off running before the others had a chance. He was now only hoping these wolves would play fair or twist this race up. "Come on Tatiana, I am giving myself a head start since you said your so fast!" For some reason Akiak just loved picking on Tatiana. She was a wolf who never acted as one would plan. She can get upset over one little thing and when the biggest things happen she is a cool breeze. She was going to definatly be a puzzle worth figuring out.

Akiak had already started, giving himself some leeway, and even adding in further patronizing remarks over his shoulder, slyly baiting Tatiana. It could've been as sinister as this...but if it were, Tatiana was oblivious to any dark intent. She was at play, and the adrenaline was calling. She narrowed her eyes, crouching in a stream-lined position, muscles bunched and ready. But a second after Akiak, Tatiana was hot on their chosen course and flying through the tall, frosty grasses like wildfire -- a woman on a mission. "Catch me if you can!" She howled, not even bothering to cast the remark backwards, but merely howling it to the skies as she sped on. She darted ahead of Akiak and continued diligently on the path, paws galloping at a rate of tireless speed.
Etheris was slower to react, perhaps because his thoughts were still stewing and brewing elsewhere. He blinked several time, the thrill of the race catching him and reeling him in completely this time. He growled with the satisfaction of the challenge, then charged ahead after his sister. Of course, for Etheris, strength was more prominent than speed, and he didn't believe he would be the one to catch up with Tatiana, the cold rush of the ground underpaw felt irresistably delicious as he raced through the tall brush.

Akiak ran happily at his normal speed through the tall grass. He was actually happy for once. He looked at the night sky which was starting to be covered with dark fluffy splotches all around the sky. The only thing he could think they could be would be snow clouds. Akiak focused again on the race and almost didn't notice Tatiana passing him. Akiak smiled and looked back to see Etheris trying to catch up. Akiak wanted to slow down to help Etheris catch up but he instead sped up faster to try to pass up Tatiana. The speedy fae was no match for him and he gave up on winning yet tried and ran harder. Akiak was suprised to see more acceleration comming from him. He was almost close enough to snap down on Tatiana's tail, but the tempting thought faded quickly and he attempted to pass her, only to be neck and neck.

Tatiana sped on at her steady speed of euphoric acceleration. She took scarce note of Akiak's pulsing run next to her own, but delighted in the dance of the race, paws whipping through the snow and dirt with vigorous diligence. Neck and neck they seemed to run, but Tatiana didn't mind in the slightest. A neophytes' race was nothing of life and death. She didn't care whether or not she won or lost, or, by the appearences of things, tied with the wolf running next to her. Hm, I guess he's a pretty good runner, too. Maybe he's not so dark and creepy after all...
Etheris growled crossly under his breath, annoyance finding him when Akiak somehow managed to catch up with Tatiana. Hey, chill, he chided himself inwardly, It's just a race, nothing to get upset about or all prickly over. You know if you act like a sour sport nobody's going to ask you to play ever again! He sighed softly, not audible to the other wolves over their thirsting pants, and then gritted his teeth. His limbs felt on fire as he ordered them to multiply their speed, but it left only two feet between him and the twosome of tails that represented Akiak and Tatiana. He felt a spark of pleasure in spite of his caustic and exhausted muscles and tendons. He pumped them onward.

Akiak gave a quick glance over his shoulder to see Etheris. Now he wondered if Firefly would ever catch up. Akiak felt the wind brush past his face as he ran through the plains along with his new friends. Friends, he never had friends before. Akiak zoned out and thought about his brother and father. When he tuned out the world Akiak did not see the paw sized hole in the ground. His paw snagged the whole, tripping him. A searing pain shot through his paw and Akiak was rolling and stumbling as he fell. He yelped with pain and torture as his paw throbbed. He looked to see a small pebble wedged tightly between his toe. His paw was slightly twisted yet it did not appear to be broken. I think....its just badly sprained.
