Linera wrinkled her black nose at the faint scent of owls. It was a musky scent, neither pleasant nor distasteful. Her eyes glittered eagerly as she crouched, the growing grass tickling her underbelly.
Linera was jittery. She wasn't that old herself and to be training a neophyte...she pawed the ground anxiously.
I hope I don't mess this up. She thought, nervous.

Okashii was crouching infront of Linera. Her hackles were raised, and she was tense. Waiting for her mentor's first move.

Linera's eyes flickered momentarily to her neophyte. In that moment she took in Okashii's muscles tensed in readiness and alert eyes. She smiled her toothy smile and allowed her own muscles to relax slightly. Since agility and stealth were Linera's specialties, she would start with them.
Linera dug her claws into the dirt and darted forward suddenly. She twisted her body to bump her muzzle against Okashii's shoulder before leaping back out of attack range.
"That would have been bite too close to the neck for comfort," Linera stated. Whereas her movements had been sure, Linera's voice was withdrawn. She wasn't one for speaking too loudly. "Bunching your muscles like that helps you to strike quickly, but evasion is harder. If you relax them just a bit you will find your speed will increase."
She circled her neophyte, tail swishing languidly behind her. "Keep your eyes locked on your opponent. Your ears will tell you everything else. When an opponent comes in for an attack, their weight will shift forward. Listen for that shift. A crack of a twig, the crunch of leaves or grass, anything that will alert you. Having natural born strength is not always the key to winning a fight."

Okashii did as she was told, and relaxed her muscles. She allowed her haunches to lower just a bit. Her paws kneeded the ground, but her eyes stayed locked on Linera. Her ears went foreward.

Linera could visably see Okashii relax. She smiled. Good. Okashii was a fast learner. Linera liked fast learners.
And she listens well too. Okashii has much potential.[/color] Linera observed. She paused, tail twitching.
Linera bounded to Okashii's right side, attempting a strike at her side.

Okashii rolled, a fraction of an inch away from Linera's blow. She lept to her feet and rushed in from the back, hoping to pin her mentor down. She lept into the air.

Linera changed her footing instinctively to evade Okashii's leap. She felt the wind along her pelt from Okashii as the neophyte landed. Linera nodded.
"Better. Much better," Linera said. "Had my specialty not been in speed, your form of attack would have worked. But, you must factor in the possibility of a larger, stronger wolf than I being your opponent. The saying goes that size doesn't matter, but in battle it does. Larger wolves are usually stronger, but not all that fast. With a larger wolf, attempting to pin them down is a hopeless venture. Even on their back a larger wolf may be able to fight you off. However, with a wolf of equal or smaller size, pinning is the best way to end the match."
Linera began to circle again, her eyes darting over her neophyte for an opening. "Therefore use speed and stealth against those that are bigger and stronger than you and power against those that are smaller. They can't hurt what they can't catch."
Linera darted in again, this time aiming a nip at Okashii's legs.
