Kar staggered back a few steps, but didn't run away. "But what about you!?" he yelped. I can't leave Soren behind!
The fox continued raking its claws across Soren's skull and ignoring the blow as if it were a mere itch. Mad in every sense of the word, the fox-- no, the beast-- dug his fangs into Soren's shoulder... deep into the flesh...

Sroen blinked his eyes shut, crimson swimming into his eyes. "Don't you worry about me!" He ordered. "GO!" He pressed his weight into the fox, attempting to fling it away from him, but he knew it was too late. His skull gave an audible crack, and he was on the ground in a bloody heap.

Kar still didn't move. When Soren fell, he cried, "SOREN! NO!" He raced forward, licking his mentor's ear and staining his own fur with blood. But he didn't get to say his proper goodbyes for the fox rounded on the pup, snarling. Without a second thought, Kar finally obeyed, and ran for his life torwards the camp. The fox immediately fell into a mad pursuit.

Soren's heartbeat slowed, his breathing shallow and labored. Darkness had clotted his vision, and he could no longer see the bloodied snow in front of him. His heart clenched when his thoughts lingered on Tangerine....he'd never seen her after that terrible, terrible day... Would he meet her in the heavens? Was she still out there? What of their pups?
He would know in a few moments. What about Kar? He'd be okay...the poor pup had lost his mother. Losing a mentor couldn't be very hard after surviving something like that... Kar would make a great warrior one day...
Gone.

The fox's breath was hot on Kar's heels, and the neophyte knew that the insane creature was gaining. He could even feel a spray of foaming saliva near his tail... At the last moment-- just before the fox lunged a final time and snapped its jaws closed on its prey-- Kar careened sharply and shot through a very narrow hole in a thicket of thorned brambles and roses. Thorns dug into his side as he wormed his way down the tunnel of sharp barbs, but at least he would be safe. Glancing back, he saw that the fox was too large to fit into the hole, and the more it fought to pursue Kar, the more it injured itself on thorns. Kar shrunk back against the tangle of thorns, remaining still even as the rabid fox gave up and staggered off in search of more prey. What if he's still out there? he wondered to himself. He paused. What about Soren?

The thorns retreated after grazing the young wolf. An odd, almost freakish thing occurred right then and there. The thorns grew outward, giving Kar space to hide on the inside, and a protective, prickly sheild on the outside. The scent of RHAIN washed over the area....
and then it was gone. The thorns remained where she left them, but the goddess herself had left the premisis.

Scarred and frightened, Kar found that he had a little space to move around. He curled up in a tight ball in the center of the thorn fortress, and buried his head into his paws... Unsure of what to do, he wept.
