Soren stalked into the training hollow, tail drooping and lightly dusting the soft ground. The senior warrior hadn't been the same since he'd been seperated from Tangerine and his pups. It had suprised him greatly that the pack trusted him enough to train a neophyte again. He sat calmly in the center of the hollow and waited patiently for his neophyte, Kar, to appear.

Kar prowled forward, inching through the bushes in the direction of his mentor. Being a novice, he made casual noise when stepping over leaves-- not much, but enough to spook an alert mouse or rabbit or deer... or wolf, for that matter. He jumped out of the bushes, crashing into Soren with a gleeful yelp. "Can we train? Can we hunt? What do we get to do today, Soren?" he woofed, blurting out a plethora of questions in a few seconds, the excited neophyte's tail a mere blur.

The stoic, stone-like wolf stood up and gave himself a shake, clouds of dust floating through the air. He glanced at Kar, then smiled a small, crooked half-smile. "Alright then...now that you're here, we should start. We'll start out with some basic hunting techniques. Now, stay very quiet and give the air around us a good tasting. What is it you can smell?" The warrior woofed deeply. Despite being an introvert, Soren had a liking for the young, enthusiatic neophyte. He'll make a fine warrior someday.

Kar gave a few overzealous nods, and then froze. From nose to tail-tip, all motion ceased... save for the quivering of his whiskers as he strained to catch a scent. Of course, he wanted to have something to relay to his sister when he returned from his training session. He inclined his head to point in the direction of an odd reek... a new reek. The reek of stoat. Tilting his head, he asked, "What is that smell?" He didn't recognize it at all.

( awee.....
let's EAT HIM! XD )
Soren blinked. He's rather sharp. "That's stoat. They're cuddly, weasel-like things. Don't let their appearence fool you, though. Weasels bite fierce. So do stoats. They'd stisfy the appetite of an elder or queen. Why don't you give it a shot, eh? First off, you need to learn the stalk-and-crouch method. You keep low to the ground, like this..." he lowered himself stealthily, keeping his tail down and his weight on his haunches. Pacing forward, he moved soundlessly. "When you get about this close," he paused, gesturing to the grass inches from his face. "...you leap. Think you want to try?"

(LOL)
The neophyte watched intently, and smiled confidently when Soren finished. "I'll try!" He crouched low to the ground, taking a few paces forward-- and stopped after he made a noise. Luckily, he could tell-- after first scenting the air-- that the stoat was still there. But he didn't want to make a mistake. I need to bring something back... "I'm making noise," he muttered, picking up his forepaw and looking down at the crushed leaf under his pads.

Soren said nothing, just trained his clear, crisp gaze intently on Kar. He's coming along well...just needs to place his weight on his haunches more. He would let Kar try out this hunt without his aid. They would go back and poke and prod at the situation afterward. A leaf crumpled slightly, but the stoat did not flee. Just a bit farther...

The neophyte made another attempt. This time, however, he shifted his weight, trying to copy Soren's movements like when he had shown him. Slowly, Kar took a few paces forward, tail twitching happily when his paws hardly made a sound. Then, he edged forward.... and forward.... and forward... Pounce! The stoat twisted about, desperate to flee at the sound of the young wolf in pursuit. But Kar was already in the air, aiming for it-- His paws came down upon the animal's tail, just barely. As soon as he detected fur beneath his paws, he pushed his weight down on the stoat and dragged the prey toward him. In a swift bite, the writhing rodent was silenced. It wasn't the ideal catch-- he hadn't killed it on his pounce-- but he had made the kill. Wait 'til I tell Annelise!

Soren smiled kindly at him. "An honorable catch, young Kar. You're coming along fine. Let's try it once more -- practice makes perfect. Open your senses to the world around you. Know the sounds of your environment. Now, what can you scent?" Soren spoke softly, tail swishing silently.

Kar did as he was told, scenting the air... While trying to find prey scent, he humorously pointed out, "I smell you." He raised his tail as he sensed something else. "...I don't know what this scent is either," he murmured, tilting his head into the bushes. He took a few silent steps forward...
A fox roused from its den in the thicket, and a low growl echoed in the brambles.
Kar froze.

Soren's eyes flickered with humour that dispersed immediately. He scented it a mere fraction of a second before Kar. He mentally cursed himself for not being aware, then allowed himself a little bit of an out. The fox had been upwind, so at least he'd not been COMPLETELY moose-headed...
Soren took a few hasty strides in front of his neophyte, controlling his panic and letting out a snarl of his own, a few tones lower than the fox's. You're getting a little old for fox fights, Soren... He reflected briefly, wondering how bad he'd be once he was through here... one thing was for certain;; no fox would touch Kar. No...not while he was there.
(rip him limb to limb, Wolfie. Then we can drag him back to the medicine den so he can die =p )

(that's a happy thought to put in little Kar's head XPXP)
The fox lashed out, viciously scoring Soren across the muzzle with razors sharp as knives. Slicing up and down, the fox yowled-- it was insane. It was rabid.
Kar's heart thumped wildly. What do I do? What do I do??

Soren stumbled back slightly, a crimson shower gushing from his muzzle. "Kar...RUN!" He howled, eyes widening as the scent hit him like a brick wall.
The fox was rabid.
He croushed, growling a challenge. "Kar...GO NOW!" He lunged at the fox, knowing full well he could not win here. The fox was rabid...and it had already marked him.
