Riley padded slowly into the Hollw, amber eyes tired and worn. He'd been afflicted with the terrible sickness, and was worsening everyday. He took nothing for granted anymore. But his death would not stop the many lives around him;; he wanted his neophyte to know at least the basics before he departed. He'd also planned to stay close to his mate and pups in the next moon or so. A single, shimmering shard of hope still resided in him, but it was worthless. He knew what was coming, and so he would make the best of the time he had left. He awaited Tavel silently.

Tavel trotted in, coughing. He smiled, though. He was just happy his mentor was still alive.

Riley felt a heavy pit in his stomach as Tavel entered. Tavel's mother had passed away the previous night, and Riley was quite suprised to see Tavel there. He was encouraged, and grateful for the emotionally-stable wolf. Freya had caused quite a scene.... "Well then...let's start out with some basic hunting moves. After that, we'll tour the territory and hunt. Sound good?"

Tavel nodded. But, he didn't speak for fear his voice would crack. He was very calm about tragedy. Really, it fascinated him.

Riley nodded. "Alright, then. First thing's first: stalking your prey. For smaller prey like rabbits, ferrets, weasels, and those sorts, this is vital to making a catch. Watch," he woofed. The patchy wolf dropped into a low crouch, slinking forward while making no noise on the ground. His tail hung low, but still off of the dirt. After a few moments of preparation, Riley sprang into the air, biting into a ferret that had been foraging among the bushes. He padded back over to Tavel and buried his prey to pick up later. He gestured with his tail for Tavel to try it out.

Tavel's ears swiveled foreward. There was a tiny shuffling in the leaves infront of him. He instantly dropped. His tail was low, barely touching the ground and he began to lightly step foreward. He placed each paw carefully. The creature couldn't be seen, but he could smell a mammal.
At the last minute, he pounced, and then yelped and flew backwards, his tail between his legs. He wasn't persuing the mammal. He was hunting a frog. The mammal was somewhere else.

Riley let out a small chuckle. "It was a good first attempt, but you'll also have to be careful of seperating scents. Don't worry, it happens to the best of us sometimes. With time, you'll earn experiance in that area;; practice makes perfect, but not overnight. Why don't you take another stab at it?"

Tavel nodded. He spun around, suprised the animal was still there. He dropped again. He repeated his crouch, stalk, and pounce. He returned to his mentor, tail wagging, with a ferret hanging from his jaws.

Riley smiled widely down at his neophyte. "Fantastic, Tavel. You can bury it with mine and we'll get a start on that tour," he woofed. Tavel could get more practice in during the tour of the terra. Riley wanted to teach the young wolf all he knew, but he knew there wasn't enough time for that. Riley wasn't the youngest wolf ever, and with the sickness...every moment was precious,

Tavel nodded, burying his catch. "Let's go." Suddenly, he was eager to be with his mentor.

Riley led his neophyte through the woods, pointing out good hunting places, places to avoid, and places to find useful things like herbs or moss for bedding. He paused at the Twilight river, eyeing the purple tendrils that stretched toward them hungrily. "Tavel...this is nightshade. Never, ever eat it. In fact, don't touch it either."

Tavel sniffed the plant. His nose curled up at the sweet-ish sour smell. "But... it's so.. pretty." He glanced again at the pretty purple flowers beginning to bloom. He just noticed that there was no snow at his paws.

Riley gritted his teeth, recalling Annelise making the same case to Magic when she'd first spotted nightshade. "Well, it's killed before. Our former leader's, Siveria's, mother died by nightshade poisoning....others have, too. You can look at it...just don't touch it."

Tavel nodded obediently. "Beauty kills, I suppose." He glanced once more at the leaves.

Riley smiled only the faintest of smiles and nodded. "Alright then...let's take another stab at that hunting crouch. This place is usually pretty prey-plenty, so go ahead and see what you can sniff out," Riley woofed.
