Dark, hungry shapes moved down into the empty hollow. A silent wind blew. The wolves sniffed the wind, hoping to scent prey. Unfortunately, no scent was found. The black wolf sighed and the white one snarled in anger. Other than those two sounds and the wind; the land was silence. No prey moved in the sky nor on the ground. It seemed as if the only life in the territory were hungry wolves. The prey that was free and could not be caught because it lived outside of the territory laughed at the wolves. Daring them to cross their border into an enemy's terra.
The white wolf howled in anger and sadness. The black one sat down, looking up at the sky. It licked its lips a few times, hoping something would appear in the sky. Something. Anything.

Saskia came up over the rise, stretching her legs and getting a brief break from her days in the nursery with her pups. She scented the air, hoping to catch something herself for the first time in a while;; Crow had brought her her food since she hadn't left the nursery. It felt good to trace the grounds of the pack's terra once more, but something seemed a bit amiss here. Why is it so....quiet? She studied the surroundings intently, but the gray and red wolf could detect no signs if any prey whatsoever. The wrinkle of prey moving through grasses or the crackling of twigs as woodland creatures past was silent except for the impact of her own pawsteps. Finally, as she arrived at the Hoot Hollow, she detected a sign of life. However, this was merely wolf scent. She spotted the two wolves shortly after, and barked a gretting. "Hello!"

Axle pricked his ears and looked at Saskia. "Hi... If you're looking for prey, don't expect to find any here. Shadow and I were just leaving, actually." He nuzzled Shadow who had laid down in boredom.
Shadow yawned and started thinking. Maybe we should sneak into loners' lands. There might be food there. If we're lucky, the famine probably didn't reach that far. She did a half smile, since she usually never fully smiles, and softly wagged her tail.

Saskia seemed crestfallen. "Well that's just lovely..." she sighed heavily, deep in thought. "Hey...the Siverians and Destinians looked plump enough at the last gathering....looks like the famine didn't touch them. So this lack of ffod must not stretch very far..." She mused aloud, toying with different ideas and possibilities. She knew she shouldn't get into too much trouble;; she had her family to think about, but for the same reasons, she knew they would have to do something to bring back food. The pack needed it desperately, especially with the growing tensions between the alliances.

"That's what I was thinking," said Shadow. "Maybe we can go into the loners' lands and look around. We may get in trouble, but it's an idea." She shrugged and stood up. "What do you guys think?"
Axle looked away and shrugged.

Saskia flicked her tail slightly and nodded her agreement. "We have pups to feed, and not only mine. The nursery is particularly crowded, and the others are just as hungry. The only way we're going to get through this as a whole pack is by eating. We can't allow each other to starve...especially with recent events. We shouldn't go too far, though...Black Fury will notice if a pack starts hunting in the loner lands. We can explore just past the border," she hesitated. "Maybe we shouldn't tell Light right away...though I'm not sure. He's got a lot to deal with, and this could bring about a bit of trouble...but it's nothing permanent, right? Just an in for food, then out again....right?" She didn't like keeping secrets from the pack...but it was nothing too terrible. In fact, she'd overheard Lyell and Crow talking about something similar the previous day. Even if it did seep out...it was nothing to get worked up over.

Axle sighed and finally nodded. "We'll do it, then. Keep quiet about this okay?" He looked around, his ears swiveling in different directions to make sure no one else was around.
Shadow started walking away. "Shall we go now? Or do you guys just want to stand there?" She felt oddly impatient today. She knew why, but she didn't feel like telling anybody her problems.

Saskia shrugged. "All right then, let's head out." She passed Shadow, figure low to the ground. They were still in Yozoran territory, true, but no wolf should be able to see them leave if they were going to do this successfully. She darted and wove through the hollows and copses of trees with ease, knowing each one full well by now, as the others of her pack did as well. The border could soon be seen in front of them, nothing but the scent marker really signalling the edge. She paused, auds swiveling and nose working to determine the stance of their current premisis. "I think we're clear!"

Shadow and Axle followed Saskia. Axle kept running across the border, but paused soon enough that he didn't go too far.
Shadow sighed. "Lear to control yourself. We can't get caught. Who knows how many wolves will actually agree about finding prey in the loner lands." She lowered her head to the ground and sniffed. The stale scent of a squirrel, a rabbit and moose filled her nose. Old... We need to go further.

Saskia nodded in agreement with Shadow, gazing at Axle with a cross between annoyance and amusement....if that was even possible. XP She slunk forward a bit more, noting the stale taste of prey. However, when the Yozoran border faded from sight, a fresh, mouthwatering scent came to her: a herd of moose was nearby. She shot a glance at Axle, and then Shadow, a small smile on her maw. "It's definitly worth a shot. There might be a weaker one or two we can pick off." She frowned suddenly. "It would give everyone something to eat if we managed two or three...but they'd wonder where we got them from..."

Shadow lowered her ears. "That's true... We could say it had wandered into the territory, we chased it, it kept going out of the territory, and we just kept chasing it until we killed it. That's the only thing I can think of currently." She shrugged and slowly followed the moose scent.
Axle sat down and waited. He wanted an answer.

Saskia nodded. "Good thinking. That way we aren't completely lying about our little adventures here....okay. Let's go take down some moose...." she smiled a bit. There hadn't been any moose around for a while now, and it seemed perfect that there was a herd close to the border. Black Fury wouldn't notice -- not if they were careful about when they chose to hunt here. And besides, Black Fury didn't make his camp and terra this close to the packs. Then again, who knew what that crazed tyrant would do? Saskia crept foward until she spotted a young female moose, a little slower than the rest of her herd. She looked back at Axle and Shadow. "How about that one for starters?"

Shadow examined the moose closely and nodded. "That one will do. Let's go." She crouched low and started to stalk forward.
Axle was already getting closer.

Saskia slunk forward, eyes locked on the back of the moose. She had a pretty clear shot to leap up and go directly to the back of the neck to paralyze it. She was only a few feet away now, and her paws drew carefully across the grass so she would remain as silent as possible. She leaped, leanded squarely on the creature's back. It registered her presence quickly, and started grunted and flailing its limbs in alarm. Saskia gritted her teeth, and dug her claws into the brown skin to keep balance. Her fangs locked into the back of its neck, but she was jarred off of the beast just as she hit bone. Snarling with frustration, she leaped again, and reattached her canines into the wound.

Shadow leaped for te moose's shoulder. She dug her teeth deep into the shoulder as the moose tried to shake her and Saskia off.
Axle crept to the front of the moose. His eyes never left its neck. When he was in jumping distance, he ran forward and slashed his claws right across the moose's neck. He jumped away before the moose could maul him with its hooves.
