((I'll miss him... I tried to give him a good send off. I think this is the only way he would die... I hope you guys like))
A shadow trod silently in the night, paled only by a swath of moonshine that set his fur aflame in brilliant silver. Deep amber eyes- once clouded by false doubts- now shone with new purpose. He was going to fix this- for his daughter. For his son. For his mate. For everyone he knew, he was going to be a better wolf. He would show him that even in the most unfortunate of circumstances, it was possible to turn your life around… and let the hero that he used to be shine through.
Hazy. Red. Blood.
A white figure limped forward, eyes dilated and bloodshot. His frame was huge and muscular, yet his skin sagged and sallow. His ribcage was visible through his mangled pelt, and his face was forever contorted into a fierce snarl.
Apathetic gaze sweeping over the land, the shadow of a wolf was clearly hungering… and rank of illness. Hielo- brother of Alaskansong- had fallen victim to rabies, and he had succumbed to the ailment…
The scent of wolf grazed his nostrils, and he inhaled slowly.
Meat and blood… it was calling him.
Arroyo paused, sniffing the air. He wasn’t far from the Eternal Tree- he could see it now, its branches entwining and knotting and its bark washed in a ghostly shine. But he could hear something- pawsteps. Yes, he was sure of that.
He turned sharply and headed for the trees.
Will my dream come true? Will I die today?
Hielo was positive now- he was so close he could hear the other wolf’s breathing… so calm and so fearless. He began to drool and quickened his pace.
Coming to a dead halt, Arroyo stared into the trembling foliage in front of him.
Hielo crouched.
The bushes shuddered.
Arroyo’s eyes widened.
“Kar!”
“Hey Dad,” he responded softly, offering his father a small smile. “I… I saw you walking away from camp earlier… and you said you loved us… and you meant it.”
There was a sting in his chest, but also warmth in his heart. You can make this all better- the dream hasn’t come true yet. Sometime soon, ‘I love you’ won’t be so rare and shocking to hear from me… I swear it.
He stepped forward and embraced his son with his muzzle ever so gently, like a mother would do to a newborn pup.
“…I am so sorry… for not being there for you…”
And Kar allowed it, hearing his father speak from his heart for the first time in moons. My father is still alive… he’s still here… there’s still time-
And in one fluid motion, the ecstasy was shattered. Hielo’s fangs were at Kar’s neck, claws digging into his skin. Foam sprayed from his bulky jaws as he gnashed his teeth at the younger wolf…
But, within seconds, Kar felt himself flying through the air, away from the suffocating pressure Hielo had been pressing onto his chest.
Arroyo had pulled Kar free and shoved his son away, now standing between the rabid monster and his own kin.
“So, Judgment decided to pay me a visit after all? Well, you won’t be getting any welcome from me… I’m sending you back to the hellhole you crawled out of!”
Hielo lunged, but Arroyo quickly dodged, leaping over the wolf. “Run, Kar!” he snarled, landing lightly on four paws and swiveling about to deliver a brusque swipe to the flank.
An enraged howl resounded from his enemy’s maw, and soon Hielo responded with a fierce kick from his back legs- right into Arroyo’s muzzle. A claw hooked under an eyelid, and with an agonizing cry the black wolf fell back into the wet, dew-soaked grass.
“Dad!” Kar yelped.
“I told you… to run!” Arroyo managed, staggering to a stand and his right eye bleeding profusely. “Hurry!”
Hielo came again, but Arroyo was ready this time- he ducked and countered the assault by clipping the rabid wolf’s ears with his fangs, coming up and then throwing his weight down onto the other wolf’s body to unbalance his foe.
It worked; Hielo stumbled and crashed onto the ground, legs split asunder. Now sprawled out- vulnerable- on the ground, Arroyo twisted about to dig his fangs into Hielo’s neck… but missed, as Hielo suddenly rolled over, overwhelming Arroyo with his weight.
“DAD!”
“I told you to run!” Arroyo snapped, biting into Hielo’s ear and yanking backwards… which forced Hielo to roll off him in an attempt to get away. Now freed, Arroyo jumped to his paws, panting. He glared at Kar- not a furious glare, but a desperate one- and hissed, “I am not going to let you die today- no. I am not going to fail anyone ever, ever again!”
Quickly recovering from his blunder, Arroyo planted his paws firmly on the ground, lowering his head to stare down his opponent. “Hear me now, my family, for I will always protect you…”
Hielo and Arroyo charged toward each other, Arroyo slipping to one side and slicing Hielo’s shoulder… and receiving a deep cut on his thigh.
He skidded to a stop, turning to meet his foe again.
“Hear me now, my ancestors, for I will not disgrace your name…”
Again they ran. This time Arroyo hindered the beast greatly, having sliced into his foreleg.
They turned.
“Hear me now, my Creators, for I have lived a long life…”
Attack and turn.
“Hear me now, my Reaper, for you will not rip my soul from me.”
And then it happened.
Time grew to a standstill. One moment, Arroyo was bracing himself for his death. Memories flooded before him in great, crushing waves, drowning him. All of the wolves he had known, all of the places he had seen, all the moments he had experienced, all the memories that had rested- dormant- in his mind; all of it flashed before his eyes as Hielo came upon him, preparing to kill him. But one memory above all seemed to triumph. The one that was the strongest, fondest memory he could have ever wished for… his love for his family. It was so strong, so fierce that he feared that if he had lost it, he wouldn’t be able to stand up.
But he remained standing, and- as he did so- a funny thought crossed his mind.
I don’t want to die.
He thought it somewhat amusing- he had wanted for so long to die… to one day just wake up and find himself beside Siveria and his sister. But now that he had finally realized the importance of his children in his life, he came to the startling conclusion that he didn’t want to do this…
So Arroyo began to leap out of the way-
He couldn’t.
The herbs were wearing off, and once again his leg was painfully locked in place.
In that fraction of a second, Arroyo smirked to himself.
I suppose there’s a little touch of destiny everywhere, for better or worse-
And blood soaked his throat as fangs met flesh.
“…it’s about time…” he managed slowly, twisting his neck- knowing there was no time to spare- and dug his fangs deep into Hielo’s spine…
There was a sickening crack, and the alleviated pressure on his neck let Arroyo know that Hielo was dead…
But I’m not dead yet…
What could I possibly do now…?
And then his mind clicked, and through the blood he smiled lightly, as if realizing the most obvious answer in the world.
But I think you need to go to the Eternal Tree....sleep there.
She has her mother’s voice…
I know most wolves are not allowed, as there is a barrier that scarcely is let down, but you will be let in, I know this....
I have no doubt that they will let me in…
Go there tonight. Sleep.
I will sleep like I never have before…
Dream.
I will dream like I never have before…
And return to your daughter and son tomorrow morning.....
I will never leave your side.
…and your mate.
Nor hers….
To tell the truth, Arroyo wasn’t quite sure how he had come to arrive at the Eternal Tree, nor did he know how he was able to drag himself down among the roots and dirt until he found himself in the dark… brushing against the sides of the cave.
He didn’t remember much, nor looked like he was aware of anything. He was somewhat sure that Kar was in hysterics, yelling his name over and over and even tugging on his fur a few times… at least, he was pretty sure. But what was absolutely certain and undeniably correct was that Arroyo died in the Eternal Tree, his throat slit and his eye gouged, with a wistful smile on his face… with his last words and final thoughts being those he had spoken to Siveria the time he had almost died in the other forest long, long ago:
”I love you more than anything, Siveria... I'd give my life for you...”
When the tears come streaming down on your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

This is my life
It's not what it was before
All these feelings I've shared
And these are my dreams
That I'd never lived before
Somebody shake me 'cause I
I must be sleeping
Now that we're here, it's so far away
All the struggle we thought was in vain
And all of mistakes one life can take
They all finally start to go away
Now that we're here, it's so far away
And I feel like I can face the day
I can forgive, and I'm not ashamed
To be the person that I am today
These are my words
That I've never said before
I think I'm doing okay
And this is the smile
That I've never shown before
Somebody shake me 'cause I
I must be sleeping
Now that we're here, it's so far away
All the struggle we thought was in vain
And all of mistakes one life can take
They all finally start to go away
Now that we're here, it's so far away
And I feel like I can face the day
I can forgive, and I'm not ashamed
To be the person that I am today
I'm so afraid of waking
Please don't shake me
Afraid of waking
Please dont shake me
Now that we're here, it's so far away
