Joyful birds chirruped from frosty branches, yet the landscape was stil layered with thick white blankets. Give it a few weeks, and Spring would be waking the land with her green sprouts and fronds. The birds could hardly be blamed for celebrating early. And they were not the only ones celebrating. The femme was a blur and she darted through the depths of her pack's home terra. Her pelt, strange with its violet aura due to the top coat of blue and the bottom of russet red, stood out bluntly in the woodland - snowcapped region, but she was wolf, and a predator in these lands. She roamed free and felt little weakness. Nightshade arrived at her destination a few moments earlier than she had asked her neophyte, Paine, to come. Yet again, I am a mentor.... Pride still filled her chest as the beta thought of that title. She was starting to gray in her facial features, but new energies flooded her lungs. She felt refreshed, rejuvinated -- partially thanks to Melina shortly announcing her new place in the pack, and partially because of the joy of the new generations becoming proeliators. She waited for Paine patiently, hot breath cascading from her maw as she panted from her run.

((is everyone going to use his name as a pun >.< )) Paine padded into the hollow. He had a bored, yet slightly angry expression on his face. He never felt the need for a mentor, thinking that it was best to grow up learning the hard way to be a true warrior. But him always being loyal to those in charge, he never thought to express his feelings aloud. He didn't want to be exiled from a pack because of his opinions. Sighing, he calmly asked, "So what are we going to be doing today?"

(( sorry, I didn't know it would offend you xP ))
Nightshade, looked thoughtfully at her novice, pensieve on the question asked. I guess it's good to start with staple hunting and scenting tactics. Basic battle training is typically my second lesson....all right then, I suppose we should get started, then. "Well. we've got to start somewhere, and we can't get anywhere unless we have something to build off of, so our first few lessons will be about the basics, the foundations of lupine skill. Take a deep inhale, and tell me what you scent," she woofed softly, taking a nonchalant whiff for herself so she could judge the results of Paine's first scenting.

He took a quick breath and sighed. "Hare. Kind of old, kind of new, I guess it's in the middle. I think farther away there's deer...or something." He shrugged and yawned. "Okay, now what?"

Nightshade watched as the young wolf sniffed the air. His yawn triggered a mild annoyance in Nightshade, and she tilted her brow at him curiously. "That's true, but there are other scents in the forest besides that of animals. Scent again, and tell me what comes to mind. If you don't recognize something, just describe the way the scent smells to you," she woofed. "Oh, and from now on, I suppose you should try and get to the dens earlier. You look tired," she added. It may have not been the case, of course -- Paine might be easily bored. But I'm not going to deal with the lethargy. He can shape up a bit.

Paine rolled his eyes. "Fine, whatever." He sniffed again. "Tree. Some type of fern. Rocks... What am I suppose to be looking for exactly? And I'm not bored. I'm just waiting for the real action to start than just sitting here and sniffing stuff." He sniffed once on purpose to prove his point.

Nightshade smiled suddenly, wicked mischeif flashing in her eyes. "Forget it. Action it is. We'll begin fighting practice immediately." She stood, eyes flickering, but most definitly unreadable. She paced a few feet away from Paine, to the other side of their small clearing. Whirling around, she dropped into a crouching defensive position. She beckoned to Paine with a flick of her tail, then rolled her shoulders back, flexing. "I am an enemy warrior, here to steal pups from the nursery. Attack me. Attack me now," she ordered firmly. A dangerous dare dashed through her steady gaze. Come on then, Paine. Let me see what you're made out of.

"Why would anyone steal pups? They're useless unless you train them right. That's why my siblings are dead, they were useless. Getting into a fight with a wolf just because they're kidnapping pups is stupid." He shrugged and stood up to stretch. "When I said action, I meant hunting. I did smell a hare..." His nose wrinkled to hide his sudden amusement.

Something hard and fast flew into Paine. A blur of red, blue, silver, and Nightshade pinned her neophyte. Her eyes bore into his. She retained her cool, a thin smile upon her maw, but she was not to be trifled with. "I heard you fine, but I'm not here to play please-the-neophyte. You're going to get shit flung at you in life, Paine, and a lot of the time, it's not going to be enthralling and heroic, it's going to suck. Suck worse than learning how to smell that hare you so desperately want to hunt. You can't walk if you don't have paws. You can't hunt if you can't smell. Now, I am your foe, attack me!" She sprang away from him, and prowled back to her former position at the end of the hollow. Her tone had been firm, again, certain and rigorous. The beta was steady in her convictions.

Paine was silent for a minute, acting surprised, but then he laughed. "Some wolves fall for anything. I wasn't being serious, I was going to pretend to get the freakin' hare but double back and attack you. You tell me life's not fair, and yet I have to tell you you can't trust anyone in this world." He lifted his lips up in a sudden snarl and his eyes became ablaze in anger. "There's no one, not even your own pack members you can trust. You will all see...one day..." He charged for his mentor, stop once to sprint to the right and stalk around her, thinking of a way to get through. I'll attack right above the collar bone, a quick swift bite to add discomfort before finishing her with an attack the ear. A single little cut on her ears will make her think twice. A snarl erupted from his throat and he watched Nightshade carefully, waiting for the first sign of attack.

Nightshade shook her head irritably. "Kid, do you really think they would appoint me as your mentor if they thought you already had the philosophy of life down pat? You've got a lot to learn, Paine. A lot a lot. Enough of this; we came here for a basic hunting lesson and it's clear you need the basics. Now that you've probably scared off all of the prey from here to the Twilight Clearing, why don't you tell me what you scent?" Nightshade straightened her self and stretched thoughtfully. Did they really have to land me with the annoying little arrogant one? Well I'll make sure to drill something decent into his head before they make him a warrior....
