Mist paced outside of her den, denying herself the sleep her body desperately longed for. It won't do any good, anyway. I'll wake up more exhausted than I was before, and nothing will get done... She sighed heavily, trying to order her thoughts. I'll call a meeting, she decided. Take care of ceremonies, announcements, burial arrangements, and a new plan. We need to start taking action. We won't get any closer to finding the cure if we just sit here waiting for Redfang and the others to send us one...
A blood-curdling snarl stopped her dead in her tracks.
Whirling around, the silvery white alphess let out a gasp of shock. "NO! Not you too....dear GOLDEN WOLF NO!" She howled, shreik echoing off of the stones.
The brute took one perilous step towards her, dark eyes flashing with pain and exploding anger. A scarred and bloodied tongue swiped over the wolf's foaming jaws, saliva spewing out onto the rockface. The white foam poured from him like a waterfall;; there was no stopping, no controlling the monster that had been imprinted inside of him.
Mist tried to call out again, tears welling in her eyes as he pressed closer to her still. She drew back on instinct, realizing all too late that she would be trapped in her den to become victim to whatever had manipulated her packmate's spirit. No words passed from her lips. All she could do was tremble and seal shut her eyes to embrace the pain.
A splitting spasm like none other seered through her neck as shining scarlet fanged plunged into her jugular. "AHH...ahh...no....tell me it isn't you....dear...golden...wolf..." she breathed. The light around her began to dim, but she struggled to keep her sight locked on her attacker. She didn't raise a single claw in defense. How could she?
His slavering mouth opened in a hideous snarl, the sickness thick and heavy in his strangled breath. He raised a ripped paw to strike her down, but as his paw fell, a shadow fell across the opening to the den. A cry was heard as she backed away from the scene of death. "F-Father?! How could you?! You told me you would fight this!" She wailed. "How could you betray us like this?! I--no. You aren't my father anymore. He died a long time ago....he died when this poison first swam through his veins. And it's I who has to kill you..." she choked out, almost unbelieving of her own revelations. "Goodbye, father...." she breathed. She got a running start, and from there leaped onto her foe's back. Silently, she snapped down on the back of his neck. With an audible crack, she severed his spinal cord, and backed off to watch him wither away, crystal tears streaming from her eyes.
"Mist?" she whispered eventually, trembling as his body stilled.
Mist woke from her trance, having lost a life, and rose to face Laika.
"I couldn't do it, Laika. I couldn't kill my own brother...."
