What happens if Alice never sees Bella jumping off of the cliff in La Push and disappearing into the water? Rosalie never tells Edward, and he doesn't go to Volterra in the hopes of ending his life. Instead, Jacob and Bella have more time for their relationship to flourish. After their first extra month together, Jacob and Bella begin dating. He makes her feel whole again and eases the pain in her chest that used to threaten to rip her in two.
Meanwhile, Edward was naught but a hollow shell, feeding only as often as absolutely necessary. He needed something to help him feel alive again, but he was too ashamed to confront his family. Searching for something to ease the pain within his being, he wandered the globe, avoiding the United States at all costs. After a few weeks, he found himself in Volterra. Aro extended another offer for Edward to join the Volturi, and this time he accepted. It didn't make him happy, but it gave him something to do that took his mind off of Bella.
There was still too much time to think of her, and after almost six months with the Volturi, Edward returned to Forks to see Bella. He followed her scent to Port Angeles where she sat with Jacob in a restaurant, celebrating their six month anniversary together. He watched in horror as she kissed Jacob. Something inside of Edward snapped, and before he knew it, he was holding a mugger, drained of blood in his arms. With the crimson-eyed monster awake inside of him, Edward could think of nothing but killing the werewolf he had seen with his Bella, and draining her of her sweet freesia smelling blood.
