She'd once been a cloudy beauty, with a lush pelt like fresh stormclouds waiting to pour. Her eyes had held in the rain, those grey pools like the very essence of the wind. And as she grew older, she became so much more like her mother. So much more like the Storm. Her build was the same, muscular but lean. Powerful, yet slim. Swift and ready to move at any given moment. She was just as determined, somtimes stubborn, and deeply loyal as the wolf who had died giving birth to her. But no longer was she the reflection of her mother's strong, free, and breezy days. Laying there, helpless in her nest, she resembled the ashen Storm, as she uttered her last words. But not even that. For Carolina could speak no more. Her throat was closed with a flaming, itching, searing blockade. Water could barely slip in before it evaporated at the touch of her mouth. Her tounge was dry, and cracked with blood. If she could open it wide enough, one would see the crimson coating it thick. Her fur was sparse and thinning rapidly; a bedding of it layed scattered around her. Her eyes leaked a steady stream of burning tears, that seeped onto her cool, paled skin. It gave her the most bitter shivers, colder and nastier than anything Winter could ever throw. But the forest fire continued to scorch her insides, as it had scorched Storm. "Sothis..." she whispered, voice almost non-existent. Her eyes were closed tightly, not wanting to face the horror she had become.

The creature's canvas was a dark blueish ebony. Shimmering with the light of a healthy wolf. In his powerful jaws a freshly slaughtered rabbit hung. This was to feed his beloved, if she could eat at all. The brute had grown much, and had become strong for a wolf who disliked fighting and the like. He hunted three times a day. once for the pack, once for Carolina, and once for himself. Though sometimes he did not eat, but instead lay awake thinking. Now, as he broke through the entrance of the Herb Healer's den the brute's deep midnight pools sought out the familier figure of Carolina. He had entered just in time to hear the fae utter his name. It must have taken great strength. Swiftly he padded to her side. Dropping the rabbit to the earth and giving her muzzle an affectionate lick. The brute no longer feared the disease, if he had not gotten it yet he doubted he would. "I'm here."

The corners of her mouth upturned a bit, trying desperately to smile, but not quite acheiving it. "Thank you..." was all she could manage. She blinked her bloodshot eyes open, gazing up at him with wonder and awe. He was an angel, and she looked like hell. She wondered if he could see her...confusion? No, it wasn't quite that. She loved him deeply and eternally, but how could he love her? He had life, he was healthy, full, and vibrant! And she was withering away, and still the heart of gold loved her. If she had breath, he would take it away, for Sothis was the only light left in the darkness that the cold world had become. Slowly, she shifted forward to take a small, miniscule bite of rabbit. She blinked up at him, eyes sorrowful and pleading for him to hear but three words: I love you.

The brute dropped himself into a sitting position. Long, blueish tail would gently brush across her side. Perhaps to comfort the beautiful fae. As disheaveled and horrible she might look, Carolina was still beautiful in his eyes. "Hush sweetheart. Eat and rest. You won't have to suffer through this much longer, I'll find a cure." How in the Hellfire could he be so sure of himself? Well, he didn't know, but he was. The brute seemed to understand what Carolina was trying to say to him. "I know sweetheart, I know."

Carolina finished her meal and did her best to clean the blood from her lips. She sighed heavily, realizing that the blood was not from the rabbit, but from her own throat. She closed her eyes for a moment, then managed to croak, "How is the battle with the rouges?" She was referring to the skirmish out on the Starlit plains. The last time that she'd been updates, the Destinian forces were having an easy time driving them out. She hoped they returned soon.

The brute's midnight blue optics turned to look at something that wasn't there for a moment. Long blueish ebony tassle continued to gently brush along the beautiful Carolina's side in a calming motion. Auds swiveled to catch the words that the fae managed to utter. "Last I saw Euphrates didn't look so well. But I think we are doing fine, the rogues seemed to be losing the fight." The brute's voice was its normal calm tone. That was just how Sothis was; calm adn relaxed. The brute had only been really angry once before, and only Carolina had seen his rage. Sometimes that fury flared up in him, but only when he thought of not being able to find a cure. At the moment the brute was in fact racking his mind, but he could think of nothing that would help his love. It was utterly frustrating. And what frustrated him even more was that he seemd to be immune to the disease and here was Carolina in a horrible state and lucky to be alive. That brought rage to him, for she should be strong and healthy. He should be able to find her a cure.

Carolina nodded slightly. Her paws twitched oddly as she sensed his anger building once more. Sighing heavily again, she moved closer to him and leaned on his shoulder. "Don't hurt yourself, love," she managed to woof softly. She was referring to the spells of fury that sometimes bound him. She wanted a cure as much as he did...she'd just accepted her death already. Sothis had not. Pain rippled through her grey pools. How would he take her demise? Sothis was strong, yes, but she'd begun to accept the truth that he genuinely loved her, no matter how undeserving she was. She loved him eternally, but she didn't want him to waste his life on one that was rapidly fading. A soft breese tickled the remainder of her pelt, and rubbed gently against her skin. It was warm, much to her suprise. A new surge of strength was building in her, as if hearing her previous thoughts. "Not yet....I'm not giving up quite yet..." she murmured. No. I want to live a long life, a long life as a Destinian....a long life with Sothis. I want to finish my training, be a warrior. I want to be the mother of his pups, and raise them as brave, strong spirits. I will serve my pack until I am weathered and elder, and then retire from the services, where I will grow old and face death, rightly so. With Sothis.

Upon the brute's features a strange look took over for the irritation and anger that had been builidng. Guilt and shame. The brute tried not to let his anger out around Carolina, he usually went off to secluded parts of the territory and slashed at a tree or some such thing to releive his body of the fury. The main reason he refused to show that particular emotion around her: it wasn't one that he was so good at controlling, not like the rest of his emotions which he could keep locked up in the back of his mind much more easily.
As Carolina leaned against his blueish shoulder the brute sighed deeply. A hot breath that came out on the top of her head. Whenever he was so close to Carolina that wonderful sense of calm and happiness flooded over him. How many nights had Sothis stayed awake staring up at the heavens and asking the same questions. How many times had he wondered what his purpose was. Now Sothis knew. Carolina was his reason for existence, the point to his life.

Carolina looked up at her beloved for a long moment, studying the depth of his endless ocean pools. It would be so easy just to remain here forever...and be lost in them. Though it could not be so, she was thankful for each and every moment.
"Let's go for a walk," she woofed eventually. "I have enough energy to move around for a bit....and I've never quite seen the sky like it is tonight." She glanced back at him, hopeful.
Outside, the stars were shimmering and vibrant, blazing with the light of a thousand and one imaginations. Never had shattered glass seemed so perfect in the sky, coloured a royal shade of indigo that could never be duplicated. The night was crisp, but not cold like Winter. Spring had made her mark, warming and waking the Earth with sweet, warm whispers.

Optics of midnight eyed her for a moment, taking in just how sick she was. Perhaps he was worried about her, definetaly worried, and about her health. He didn't want her to waste her energy when she needed it so badly.Eventually though, the brute would give in. If she wanted to go for a walk, then they would go for a walk."Alright, come on then." He sighed deeply and rose. The brute remained close to her when she moved, in case she needed a shoulder to lean on. Tail resting gingerly on her torso. Sothis always, always, always worried about Carolina. Especially now that she had become so ill and close to death. The thought lingered in his mind, haunting his every paw step.

Carolina gave him the best smile she could muster, eyes sparkling suddenly with their former breeze of liveliness. For one shimmering moment, it would've been easy to see her as her long ago self, a pelt of sleek grey complimenting the shades of her optics. Muscles rippling under the young fae's fur. But no longer.
It was over in a flash, so quick one might've missed it had they blinked. She pressed forward with some difficulty, but was grateful for Sothis to lean on. The thought was simple, really, she supposed. She'd known all along Sothis was the one for her, the mate of her soul. But had she really realized how deeply that traced?
That split second....that moment,....it had been for Sothis. He was the one reason she was still alive; because he loved her. And their affection burned stronger than the hottest fever ;; something that would never sweat out. And it dove deeper than oceans, everlasting blue.
The sudden revelations nearly knocked her breath right from her, but she took a few more brave steps regardless. Warriors did not cower in the face of danger, and neither would she.

The impossibly midnight optics of the strangely painted blueish ebony brute clouded for a moment. It was as if he was seeing the beautiful fae as her old self. Of course, her inner beauty always shone through the cloud of sickness that had enveloped her. To him anyway. As if it had never happened optics glimmered with hope and life. Carolina might be a little older, but being a brute Sothis was larger. Something like a smile seemed to take its place on the brute's velvet muzzle. Auds swiveling forwards as they exited the den. Optics darting around the familier camp that was his home before darting back to his purpose, the beautiful creature at his shoulder.

Carolina managed fine until the camp was just out of sight. Her knees threatened to buckle and crumble beneath her, but she held her balance. She eventually compromised with her handicapped abilities and sat down in the shadows of an old sycamore. The ancient tree offered and umbrella of leaves, protection from the direct effects of the night's cool, windy breath. She stared up at the heaven in awe and wonder, then back at Sothis. Suddenly, an impatient thought pattern took the place of her sorrowful one. Sothis and I should be warriors by now...what's keeping Sirius so long?

Sirius... sometimes I wonder if he is even capable of his duties, there are so many pups and neophytes that should have made it to the next rank long ago. Myself, Carolina, Nutmeg, Mocha.... The list trailed on in his mind. Paws took him away from the camp into the cool of the forest. Perhaps he just cannot deal, the Destinians are the largest pack in the forest. There must be nearly fifty of us.... Blueish peltage was ruffled as the icy breeze took him in its clutches. The creature seated himself beneath the old sycamore, bodice pressed against the greyish figure of the fae seated next to himself. Midnight optics gazing up at the gorgeous night sky. The stars shimmering brilliantly.

This isn't fair. The pack doesn't just stop whenever he wants it to. She turned to Sothis, leaning lightly against his warm shoulder. At least Sothis is still here. "Do you think we'll be announced warriors soon?" She woofed softly, hopeful. Maybe he'll do the ceremonies soon...there are so many! She thought of Ashai and his siblings. They're far too big for the nursery...and even Nyra and Everest are long over do. I don't think Nirvana would be too pleased if she was down here now...and she wouldn't be silent about it, either.
