"Pssht, no! Nothing's wrong! Have you met Rhain's sister? I think you two would get along just fine! Valencia! Meet Slash, my lovely mate!" He barked hastily. Valencia nodded to Slash, then returned to yacking at away in French with Rhain.

Slash narrowed her eyes. "Are you sure nothing's up, Death? You've never acted like this before, love."

Lupus, now alone, sighed deeply, and looked up for a moment. The moon was large and still... yet strangely beautiful. "The paws and the claws and the jaws and the maws and the blood. Warfare is what warfare does... This and the miss and the bliss and the kiss and the heart. Love is what love does..." He shook his head, and closed his eyes tight. "Does anyone love anymore..."

"Yes, Mister Lupus, I DO love you!" Rhain whispered in his ear, only the ghost of her previous humor was there, now. "Black Mist and White Mist are moving out within the hour." She reported.

Lupus glanced at her, almost doubtful. Then, at her next words, he sighed. "At least they're moving now... It's only a matter of time until-- well, you know."

Rhain nodded. "Twenty-six days, the packs will travel the mountains." She woofed. "Rain is gone. This worries me a bit," she told him.

The wofl inclined his head slightly. "The Beta is Mist.... Is she loyal? As long as Mist in, there shouldn't be true worries..."

"No wolf go give more to her pack then Mist, Lupus. She's just had pups, too. This journey will be hard on White Mist...." She murmered.

Lupus closed his eyes. "The journey will be hard on all the packs... on everyone." He sighed. "I just hope that death will be minimal..."

"That's beyond reason, Lupus. The packs didn't have much of a choice, but there are a great number of young pups on this journey. I'm almost glad Silentfire died when he did. It was terrible, yes, but could you imagine watching......the first thing you see when you open your eyes is death. I would never wish that on anyone...." She shuddered. She was very fond of young Silentfire, and had sort of taken it upon herself to mother him.

"That's why I"m hoping," Lupus murmured. He shook his head and sighed heavily. "I've seen BloodMist cross the mountains when they escaped the humans... I've seen this before." His breathing quickened for a moment, then returned to normal. "I've seen many die on this journey... I hope not to see that happen again."

Rhain frowned, pondering what seemed to be a false hope. "Oh, and if this means anything, Annelise has a scent for nightshade. What IS IT with that family?" She smiled at the absurdity.

Lupus exhaled sharply, slightly amused. "I have no idea..." He opened his eyes to stare off into the distance again. Finally summoning up the words, he asked one of the questions that had been bothering him for a long, long time... "Why do you love me, Rhain?"

"Not this again!" Rhain groaned. "Love is a silly, silly thing, Lupus. It is simply inexplicable! Well, it DOES help that you're such a stud!" She laughed.

He gave a soft breath of laughter, the corners of his mouth curling upwards for a brief moment. A few seconds later, the smile faded. "But why? I mean... I met you in between the worlds... how did you fall in love with me? I... I really don't understand how that happened... or why you still do, for that matter."
